Former Indian Cricket Team captain Rohit Sharma has scored his first ODI century on Indian soil in over 19 months. With that, he has all but secured his spot in the national team for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The second India vs West Indies match is currently underway at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. Despite the pitch being flatter than a pancake, India won the toss and decided to bowl first, something they did in the first ODI as well.
Rohit Sharma Scores 100 In 2nd ODI Vs West Indies
The West Indies innings was truly a spectacle. While they did lose their first wicket in the fifth over, the second-wicket partnership between John Campbell and captain Shai Hope, which was worth 110 runs, saw Campbell dominate Indian bowlers and score a century in 65 deliveries.
However, it was after John Campbell’s dismissal that the most valuable partnership of this innings came. Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo started their partnership in a cautious manner but picked up the pace a few overs in.
The third West Indies wicket fell in the 40th over at the score of 329. Hope scored the second century of this innings, making 104 off 94.
Then, in the very next over, Jangoo reached his ton and ended up making 114 off 77. It is the first time that the Windies have three centuries in a single innings in an ODI match and the second team to do it against India in India after South Africa did so back in 2015.
The West Indies ended up making 405 runs in 50 overs, putting a mammoth target ahead of the Men in Blue. For India, the pair of Rohit Sharma and team captain Shubman Gill opened the innings.
The pair started the innings off well. In the powerplay, India had scored 92 runs and had lost no wickets. Meanwhile, Rohit reached his half-century with a six in just 32 deliveries.
Rohit slowed down and played more safely when spinners came into the attack, picking off an occasional four or a six when it called for.
By the 15th over, Gill, who so far had been playing with a relatively low, but still great, strike rate, had started hitting boundaries and maximums at a higher frequency. At the end of the 16th, both batters were on 73 runs. And while Sharma had played 54 deliveries, Shubman had taken only 45.
At the end of the 20th over, the team score was 188/0. Then, on the very first ball of the 21st over, Shubman Gill reached the 100-run mark, taking just 62 balls to do so. The Indian skipper has scored two centuries in as many games in this series.
At this point, Rohit was batting in his 80s. He then got into his 90s, and rather than buckling under pressure, the veteran batter hit back-to-back fours and then reached his century in 72 deliveries.
This was Rohit Sharma’s 35th century in ODI cricket and 52nd in international cricket. He is currently, and will likely remain, third in the list of most runs in the 50-over format.
The Hitman got out soon after, caught behind by Jayden Seales, making 101 off 75 before his dismissal. This is his first century on Indian soil since February 2025.
The opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill saw the pair make 255 runs together. This is the 15th-highest opening stand in Men’s ODI cricket, the highest for the Indian cricket team since Saurav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar made 258 runs against Kenya in 2001.
With this opening stand, Rohit and Shubman gave the Men in Blue a massive platform to register a win in this high-scoring India vs West Indies game.
