West Indies wicketkeeper/batter and captain Shai Hope has scored a century in the ongoing match against India, becoming his team’s second centurion in this game.
The second India vs West Indies ODI is currently underway at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. The home side won the toss and decided to bat first, which is quite the surprise, as the pitch seems to be quite flat and batter-friendly. But this is the same thing India did in the first ODI on a similar track.
Shai Hope Scores 100 In Second ODI Vs India
The West Indies innings was opened by the pair of John Campbell and Keacy Carty. Carty was pushed up the order due to the absence of Justin Greaves, the centurion from the first ODI, who missed this game because of a calf injury.
The opening duo made 37 runs in the first five overs. However, at the end of the fifth over, Carty was dismissed by Prasidh Krishna after a brilliant catch by Naman Dhir. This brought Shai Hope to the middle.
While the skipper played a supporting role, Campbell was busy dispatching the Indian bowling attack left and right on the other end. By the end of the 10th over, the score was 96/1. Campbell had reached his half-century in the eighth over and was batting at 69 off 39. Meanwhile, Hope had been rotating strike for the last five overs, batting at a run a ball 12.
John Campbell reached his ton in the 18th over and was then dismissed for 101 for 67 in the very next over. At this point, Shai Hope was batting at 26 off 32. But soon enough, he would pick up the pace.
Hope hit a six and a four to Gurnoor Brar in the 21st over and, not long after, reached the 50-run mark in 48 balls.
With the pitch slowing down a bit, both Hope and Amir Jangoo, on the other hand, were playing more cautiously, stealing boundaries whenever possible.
By the end of the 30th over, the score was 234/2, and the West Indies were well on their way to a 400+ total.
Hope trudged towards a triple-digit score for the next few overs and finally reached the milestone in the 29th over, taking 90 deliveries to do so. With that, he became Windies’ second centurion in this match and third in this series.
However, just like Campbell before him, Shai Hope was dismissed soon after scoring a hundred. On the last ball of the 40th over, Kuldeep Yadav tricked the West Indies skipper with a googly; the ball went up in the air and was caught by Auqib Nabi.
Shai Hope made 104 runs in 94 balls. By the time he got out, the West Indies were cruising at 329 runs in 40 overs. With 10 overs left, they could very well reach the 400-run mark in this second India vs West Indies ODI.
