The BCCI has revealed India squads for the upcoming home ODI and T20I series against the West Indies, as well as announced a couple of modifications to the Asian Games touring party.
Firstly, the India squad for the ODIs against the West Indies is understrength, as some players will be in Japan for the Asian Games that clashes with the IND vs WI ODIs.
India will host West Indies in a three-match ODI series from September 27 to October 3, and it will be followed by a five-match T20I series from October 6 to 17.
The Japan-bound T20I team under Shreyas Iyer will play a one-off T20I against Japan on September 21, while the men’s cricket tournament at the Asian Games will run until October 3.
The players who will miss the ODI series are Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah, Axar Patel, Ishan Kishan, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Shivam Dube, and Yash Thakur.
Further, Hardik Pandya and Harshit Rana are injured and out of both the Asian Games and West Indies home series. Pandya is expected to return to action next month when India A hosts Australia A in white-ball games.
IND vs WI: Auqib Nabi, Naman Dhir get into India squad vs WI for ODIs; Jaiswal, Gaikwad picked in India ODI squad
Talking about the India ODI squad, KL Rahul has been appointed as the vice-captain to Shubman Gill, with Iyer away. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to international cricket, while Ravindra Jadeja will make his comeback to ODIs for the first time since January.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, Dhurv Jurel, and Yashasvi Jaiswal are picked with Iyer and Kishan in Japan. Jurel got the nod over Rishabh Pant, who has been made the captain of the Rest Of India team that will take on Jammu & Kashmir for the Irani Cup.
Fast bowler Auqib Nabi and middle-order batsman Naman Dhir have earned their maiden call-ups to the ODI squad.
Interestingly, Nitish Kumar Reddy has been withdrawn from the Asian Games squad and included in the ODI squad to face the West Indies. This is a consequence of Hardik being injured and Dube being part of the Japan-bound squad.
Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Aquib, and Mohammed Siraj are the pacers, while Kuldeep Yadav and Jadeja are the spinners.
IND vs WI: Mayank Yadav back in the India T20I squad
Regarding the T20I contingent, Varun Chakaravarthy sustained an injury while bowling in the 1st T20I against Afghanistan and has been ruled out of the rest of the Afghanistan T20Is, Asian Games, and T20I series against West Indies. Vipraj Nigam has replaced Varun in the Asian Games squad.
The India T20I squad against West Indies is similar to the one currently taking on Afghanistan, with Mayank Yadav, Kuldeep Yadav, and Prince Yadav picked while Bumrah gets a rest.
