IPL 2025: KL Rahul’s Role Evolution Continues as He Prepares for Middle-Order Challenge at Delhi Capitals | Cricket News

KL Rahul has consistently demonstrated his adaptability across formats, seamlessly transitioning between different batting positions and even donning the wicketkeeping gloves when required. Initially recognized as a top-order batter for Karnataka, Rahul made his ODI and T20I debuts as an opener. However, over the years, he has transformed into a versatile player capable of slotting in anywhere in the batting lineup based on the team’s requirements.

A Flexible Approach Across Formats

During the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy, Rahul took on a finishing role despite traditionally batting at No. 5 in ODIs. In the 2023 World Cup, he excelled in that middle-order position, but team management’s decision to promote left-hander Axar Patel forced him to adapt once again.

However, one question remains—where exactly is KL Rahul’s “comfort zone”?

His performances in Test cricket further highlight his flexible approach. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, he started as an opener but later shifted to No. 3 when Rohit Sharma opted to open. When Rohit was unavailable for the Sydney Test, Rahul returned to the top of the order. Prior to this, he had already spent a significant part of his Test career in the middle order.

A New Role Awaits in IPL 2025

Despite not playing a T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup, Rahul’s role flexibility is likely to continue as he joins Delhi Capitals (DC) for IPL 2025—his fifth IPL franchise. Set to link up with the squad soon, Rahul is expected to take on a middle-order role, a rare responsibility for him in T20 cricket.

With the team boasting a solid top order, including Jake Fraser-McGurk, new vice-captain Faf du Plessis, and Abhishek Porel, DC needed a reliable figure in the middle order following Harry Brook’s unexpected withdrawal. Given the lack of experience in that phase of the innings, Rahul’s inclusion as a stabilizing force aligns with the team’s overall strategy.

DC’s game plan could involve explosive starts from their top-order batters, followed by a controlled middle phase where Rahul, Axar Patel, and Tristan Stubbs steady the innings before accelerating toward the finish. This tactical approach is likely to be finalized before their opening match against Lucknow Super Giants on March 24 in Visakhapatnam.

Team-First Mentality Above All

While taking up a middle-order role in T20s is a relatively new challenge for KL Rahul, his ability to put the team’s interests ahead of personal preferences remains a defining trait of his career. As IPL 2025 unfolds, fans will eagerly watch how he adapts once again, proving his value as one of the most flexible batters in modern cricket.
