West Indies opener John Campbell has scored a century, putting his team in the driving seat in the ongoing ODI against India.
The second India vs West Indies ODI is being played at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati. With the pitch being quite flat and batter-friendly, India, just like in the first ODI, decided to bowl first, putting themselves in a challenging position.
John Campbell Scores 100 In 2nd ODI Vs India
To open the batting for the Windies came the pair of John Campbell and Keacy Carty. Carty was pushed up the order as regular opener Justin Greaves, who scored a ton in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram, has been ruled out with an injury.
The opening pair scored 37 runs in the first five overs. However, at the end of the fifth over, pacer Prasidh Krishna dismissed Carty via a stunning catch by Naman Dhir on point. Keacy Carty was out for nine off 10.
The wicket did not slow the West Indies down. In fact, in the very next over, incoming batter and team captain Shai Hope hit two boundaries.
It took Campbell only eight overs to score a half-century. He reached the milestone in just 29 deliveries, playing a T20-like innings in a 50-over game.
By the end of the powerplay in the 10th over, the Caribbean side had already raced up to 96/1. While Hope played a supporting role at 12 off 12, Campbell was batting at 69 off 39.
John Campbell’s carnage did not stop at just fast bowlers, as he also belted the spinners, even after the end of the powerplay. And soon enough, he was batting at 83 off 51 at the end of the 13th over.
The West Indies kept a healthy run rate and were well on their way to a score of near or even beyond 400 runs.
In the 18th over, Campbell finally reached his century, doing so at a rapid pace, in just 65 balls. And while he did get out in the next over for 101 off 68, his nine boundaries and five maximums put the Windies in an ideal position in this match.
This is his second solid performance with the bat in this series, as in the first India vs West Indies ODI of this series, Campbell scored 62 runs, contributing to the West Indies’ first 100+ run opening partnership in an ODI in seven years.
