Why CSK and KKR players are wearing black armbands in Match 22?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are facing off in an important clash in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Players from both teams are wearing black armbands. Many fans believed it was a gesture to pay homage to the legendary singer Asha Bhosale, who passed away on Sunday, April 12. However, the actual reason is different.

The two teams are paying tribute to former India cricketer CD Gopinath, who breathed his last on April 9 at the age of 96. He was the last surviving member of the Indian team that defeated England in a Test match in 1952, which was their first-ever win in the longest format. Gopinath was India’s oldest Test cricketer before his passing.

“KKR players are wearing black armbands during CSK vs KKR match in Chennai tonight, as a tribute to Mr. Gopinath,” KKR management said in a statement.

Gopinath was a right-handed batter who made his international debut against England in December 1951. He played eight Test matches, scoring 242 runs and picking up a solitary wicket. In the first-class circuit, he had 83 appearances, aggregating 4259 runs at an average of 42.16. This included a top score of 234. He also chipped in with 14 wickets with the ball.

After calling time on his playing career, Gopinath worked as a national selector, including as chairman, and later managed the Indian team during the tour of England in 1979.

Another run-fest on the cards

Chennai Super Kings would be happy with their batting performance after the Knight Riders won the toss and opted to field first. At the end of 16 overs, they have raced away to 162/6.

Sanju Samson (48) and Ayush Mhatre (38) played whirlwind knocks to set the foundation for the Men in Yellow after Ruturaj Gaikwad floundered with the bat once again. The home side will be looking to get themselves to 210-220 at least, given the fact that both Dewald Brevis and Sarfaraz Khan are well set at the crease.
