The South Africa vs Australia Test series kicked off on Friday at the Kingsmead Stadium in Durban, with the Australian captain, Pat Cummins, winning the toss and electing to bat first on a spicy pitch.
Both teams are bereft of some of their first-choice players owing to injuries. Australia are missing the services of all-rounder Cameron Green, while Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi had been ruled out well before.
Australia made the left-field call of opening with Nic Maddinson, who returns to Test cricket after a decade, and pushed Matt Renshaw to the middle order.
South Africa welcome back fast bowler Anrich Nortje in the whites for the first time since 2023.
This is the first time that Australia are playing a Test series in South Africa since the infamous 2018 series that was scarred with the Sandpaper Gate scandal involving David Warner, Steve Smith, and Cameron Green.
This is also the first meeting between the two teams since South Africa beat Australia in the ICC WTC 2025 final at Lord’s.
