The Indian cricket team was the sixth nation to play Test cricket. It made its debut in 1932, before partition, on a trip to England in a one-off Test match that the Asian unit lost by 158 runs at Lord’s.
It indeed took a long time for India to claim their maiden victory in Test cricket. India won their first Test match in 1952, beating England in Chennai, and then hammered Pakistan in Delhi and Mumbai the same year to seal their maiden Test series victory.

What Is Team India’s Highest Score In Test Cricket?
India’s highest score in Test cricket in an innings is 759/7d, which they piled up against England in December 2016 in Chennai. That Test match is famously remembered for Karun Nair’s epic knock of 303* that eventually helped India win the game by an innings and 75 runs.
England batted first and posted 477 on the board with the help of 146 from Moeen Ali and fifties from Joe Root, Liam Dawson, and Adil Rashid.
India needed a giant batting effort to give themselves a chance to win the Test match. They received it from KL Rahul and his Karnataka teammate Karun Nair.
First Parthiv Patel and Rahul had a 152-run opening stand, and then Rahul and Nair had a 161-run partnership for the fourth wicket. But Rahul, unfortunately, got out on 199, chipping the ball to the fielder at point.
Nair, though, remained resolute in a rare opportunity he had gotten in the absence of Rahane. He proceeded to have partnerships of 63 with Vijay, 181 with Ashwin, and 138 with Jadeja and was given the time by captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri to reach his triple century.
Nair became only the second Indian batsman, after Virender Sehwag, to register a triple hundred in Test cricket.
India went past their previous highest innings score of 726/9d, which was made against Sri Lanka in 2009 in Mumbai, and finished with a new innings record total of 759/7d, courtesy of Nair’s historic knock.
India bowled England out for 207 in their second innings on day 5 of the Test match, with Ravindra Jadeja taking seven wickets.
No Indian batsman has yet made a triple century since Nair’s effort back in 2016. Shubman Gill came close in 2025 when he made 269 against England in Edgbaston, while Kohli declared India’s innings when he was on 254* against South Africa in Pune in 2019.
Nair’s career, however, petered out from thereon. He featured in three Tests in 2017 against Australia before being dropped. He returned in 2025 on the tour of England, where he was part of four Tests, where he managed 205 runs and was dropped.
