The picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala played host to a high-octane encounter as Punjab Kings (PBKS) faced off against Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 58th match of IPL 2026 on May 14. In a season defined by high scores and relentless hitting, this North Indian derby provided a spectacle of tactical brilliance and raw power. While the match eventually turned into a run-fest, the highlight of the evening was a vintage tactical battle between two icons of Indian cricket: Yuzvendra Chahal and Rohit Sharma.
PBKS, batting first, set a formidable target of 201, thanks to a blistering 57 off 32 balls from Prabhsimran Singh and late-order cameos from Azmatullah Omarzai. However, as MI began their chase, all eyes were on the Hitman, who looked to anchor the innings despite a sluggish start by his lofty standards.
Yuzvendra Chahal rattles Rohit Sharma’s stumps with a peach during PBKS vs MI clash
The defining moment of the first half of MI’s innings arrived in the 10th over. Rohit, who had managed 25 runs off 26 deliveries, was looking to break the shackles. Chahal, the master of deception, was brought into the attack to stem the flow of runs, and he delivered a masterclass in leg-spin bowling.
At the 9.3-over mark, Chahal bowled a 96kph leg-break that landed perfectly on a length between middle and off-stump. Rohit, opting for a stand and deliver approach, remained relatively static in his crease, attempting to drive the ball through the cover region. However, the ball gripped the Dharamsala surface just enough to drift away. As Rohit checked his shot, he lost his bottom-hand grip, leaving a gap between bat and pad. The ball zipped past the inside edge and castled the off-stump, sending the bails flying.
Chahal erupted in his trademark celebratory sprint, joined by a beaming PBKS captain, Shreyas Iyer. It was a classic dismissal—the wily spinner outfoxing the veteran opener with flight and subtle turn. Rohit’s departure left MI at 88/3, ending a struggle where he failed to find a single boundary on the carpet, relying instead on two maximums.

Despite the mid-innings wobble caused by Chahal’s brilliance, Mumbai Indians proved why they are perennial heavyweights. Following the dismissal of Rohit and Naman Dhir, the responsibility fell on the shoulders of the young Tilak Varma. What followed was a masterclass in finishing.
Varma played a breathtaking knock, remaining unbeaten on 75 off just 33 balls, striking at a massive 227.27. His innings, laced with 6 fours and 6 sixes, systematically dismantled the PBKS bowling attack. He found able support in Will Jacks, who smashed 25 off 10 balls at the death to ensure the required run rate remained under control.
The match went down to the wire, with MI needing a clinical finish in the final over. They reached the target of 205/4 with just one ball to spare, securing a 6-wicket victory. While Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for MI earlier in the day with 4 wickets, it was Varma’s clinical aggression that earned him the Player of the Match honors. For PBKS, despite Chahal’s economical spell of 1/32 and the early fireworks from Prabhsimran, the inability to defend 200 on a true Dharamsala deck will be a tough pill to swallow.
