The Indian Premier League off-season has barely begun, but speculation around player movements is already dominating social media discussions. This time, the spotlight has fallen on Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya after a cryptic comment from veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin sparked rumours linking the all-rounder with a potential move to Chennai Super Kings ahead of IPL 2027.
Hardik endured a forgettable IPL 2026 season both as captain and as an all-round performer. Mumbai Indians finished ninth on the points table, marking another disappointing campaign for the five-time champions. The Indian all-rounder also struggled individually, managing only 146 runs in eight innings while picking up just three wickets throughout the tournament. While questions around Mumbai’s future plans were already growing, a recent Instagram story from Hardik added fresh fuel to the fire.
Hardik Pandya’s Instagram story grabs attention
The post itself appeared ordinary at first glance. It featured a laptop screen playing a movie alongside a notebook, a pen and Hardik’s mobile phone. However, eagle-eyed fans quickly noticed the time displayed on the phone screen — “07:07.”

Within minutes, social media users began connecting the number to former Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni, who famously wears jersey number seven. Many fans interpreted the timing as a subtle clue hinting at Hardik’s admiration for Dhoni or even a possible switch to CSK.
Although there has been no official statement from either franchise, the internet was quick to turn the cryptic number into a full-fledged transfer theory.
Ravichandran Ashwin adds more intrigue to the rumours
The speculation intensified further after Ashwin reacted to a fan discussion online regarding Chennai Super Kings’ squad plans for next season. A fan had questioned whether CSK should re-sign Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana if he were released by Kolkata Knight Riders.
Ashwin responded by backing the idea of retaining Pathirana while also mentioning England Test captain Ben Stokes as a player CSK should target. However, the biggest talking point came from his mention of a mysterious “07:07” player. That single reference immediately reignited the Hardik rumours, with fans convinced Ashwin was indirectly hinting at the Mumbai Indians skipper. The cryptic nature of the message only added to the frenzy, especially considering the timing of Hardik’s recent Instagram story.

Questions grow around Hardik’s future with Mumbai Indians
Hardik’s return to Mumbai Indians before IPL 2024 was one of the biggest transfer stories in IPL history. The franchise secured him from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash trade after he had guided Gujarat to an IPL title in 2022 and another final appearance in 2023. However, his second stint with Mumbai has not gone according to plan. The franchise has missed out on the playoffs in two of the three seasons under his leadership, and IPL 2026 turned out to be one of the team’s poorest campaigns in recent years.
With Chennai Super Kings expected to rebuild parts of their squad ahead of the next cycle, rumours surrounding Hardik’s future are unlikely to die down anytime soon. Whether the “07:07” theory is merely social media imagination or an early hint of a blockbuster trade remains to be seen.
