How BCCI Became the Richest Cricket Board

The journey started when Kapil Dev and his team defeated the West Indies on British soil. It was India’s first World Cup trophy. The win sparked a new interest in the sport across the nation. However, India had to wait until 2011 to win the trophy again. They also had to wait nearly four decades to host a World Cup on home soil.

The story of how India became a cricketing powerhouse begins with NKP Salve. He was the President of the BCCI at the time of the 1983 World Cup. The Test and County Cricket Board refused to give him two extra passes for the final. This angered Salve. He promised to move the World Cup out of England. He discussed the idea with his Pakistani counterpart, Air Marshal Nur Khan. The two neighbours joined forces and successfully brought the 1987 World Cup to the subcontinent.

Hosting the World Cup was not cheap. India and Pakistan offered each participating nation 40,000 pounds. England had only offered 20,000 pounds. The format was also reduced to 50 overs because of shorter days in the East. The organisers faced a major challenge: finding the money. Dhirubhai Ambani initially supported Salve. However, he left after Indira Gandhi was assassinated. Rajiv Gandhi then made a bold decision. The Indian government donated 1.8 million pounds. Ambani later returned and contributed Rs 6 crore to the tournament. India lost to England in the semi-finals. But the country had still won. The World Cup was held outside Britain for the first time.

The 1990s brought another major shift. Jagmohan Dalmiya became BCCI secretary. He and IS Bindra won a court case against Doordarshan. This gave the BCCI the right to broadcast cricket as a commodity. They sold the telecast rights for the 1992-93 India-England series for Rs 18 lakh. This was just the beginning. The 1996 World Cup, co-hosted by India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan, brought in $10 million for television rights and $13 million for title sponsorship. Dalmiya later became the first Asian president of the ICC in 1997. By the end of his term in 2000, the ICC had accumulated around $15 million.

The 2011 World Cup was another milestone. India won the trophy for the first time in 28 years. The tournament was originally scheduled to be co-hosted by India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. The event cost Rs 750 crore. The tournament was a technological wonder. It featured at least 27 cameras and the first-ever high-definition broadcast. The Umpire Decision Review System was used for the first time in an ICC event. ESPN Star Sports and Star Cricket paid nearly $2 billion for the television rights.
