History, Winners, Teams and Format

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket tournament organised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). It began in 2012 and gives local players the chance to compete alongside international cricketers in a franchise-based competition. Over the years, the league has featured several successful teams, including Comilla Victorians, Dhaka Gladiators, Rangpur Riders and Fortune Barishal.

The BPL has also helped Bangladesh’s domestic players gain experience against overseas stars. Its latest completed season was held from December 2025 to January 2026, with the Rajshahi Warriors winning the championship after defeating the Chattogram Royals in the final. However, the BCB announced in August 2026 that the tournament would not be held in the next season, as it works to address financial and administrative problems.

What Is the Bangladesh Premier League?

The Bangladesh Premier League is a domestic T20 competition featuring city-based franchises. The tournament is organised by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and generally takes place during the winter months.

Each team builds a squad featuring Bangladeshi players and overseas professionals. The competition includes a league stage followed by playoffs, with the final deciding the champion.

The BPL was introduced to strengthen Bangladesh’s domestic cricket structure and provide more opportunities for local players. It has also attracted international names from countries such as Pakistan, England, Australia, New Zealand and the West Indies.

History of the Bangladesh Premier League

The first BPL season took place in 2012, with six teams competing for the inaugural title. Dhaka Gladiators became the first champions after defeating Barisal Burners in the final. Dhaka Gladiators successfully defended their title in 2013 by beating Chittagong Kings.

The tournament did not take place in 2014 because of the political situation in Bangladesh. It returned in 2015, when Comilla Victorians won their first championship by defeating Barisal Bulls.

Comilla Victorians became one of the league’s most successful teams, adding further titles in 2018, 2022 and 2023. Other champions have included Dhaka Dynamites, Rangpur Riders, Rajshahi Royals and Fortune Barishal.

Fortune Barishal won consecutive titles in 2024 and 2025. Rajshahi Warriors then claimed the 2026 championship, giving a Rajshahi-based franchise its second BPL title after Rajshahi Royals won in the 2019–20 season.

During the 2026 season, six teams played a double round-robin league stage. Each team faced the other five teams twice, resulting in 10 league matches per team.

The top four teams advanced to the playoffs. The first-placed and second-placed teams met in Qualifier 1, while the third- and fourth-placed teams played the Eliminator. The Eliminator winner then faced the Qualifier 1 loser in Qualifier 2. The winners of Qualifiers 1 and 2 met in the final to decide the champion.

Why Is the Next BPL Season on Hold?

In August 2026, Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal said the BPL would not take place in the upcoming season. The decision followed concerns about financial losses and problems surrounding recent editions, including allegations of corruption and match-fixing.

The board has indicated that it wants to address these issues before bringing the tournament back. The announcement means the next edition should not be treated as confirmed until the BCB provides an updated schedule.
