Fans erupt as Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kartik Sharma lead CSK to emphatic win over MI in IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) delivered a dominant performance at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 8 wickets in Match 44 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Chasing a modest target of 160, CSK showcased composure and class with the bat, reaching 160/2 in just 18.1 overs to seal a convincing victory in front of their home crowd.

After Mumbai Indians opted to bat first, they managed to post 159/7 in their allotted 20 overs. While the total appeared competitive on a slightly sluggish Chepauk surface, CSK’s disciplined bowling attack ensured MI never truly broke free with a commanding momentum.

Naman Dhir leads MI fightback after early wobbles

Mumbai Indians had a shaky start as Will Jacks departed early for just 1 run. However, Ryan Rickelton injected some early aggression, smashing 37 off 24 balls, including five towering sixes that briefly put CSK under pressure. The innings was then steadied by Naman Dhir, who emerged as MI’s standout performer with a fluent 57 off 37 deliveries, striking four boundaries and three sixes.

Suryakumar Yadav added a quick 21 off 12 balls, but the middle order failed to capitalize fully. Tilak Varma struggled for timing, while Hardik Pandya’s slow-paced 18 off 23 deliveries hampered MI’s acceleration in the death overs. A late cameo from Trent Boult, who struck a six in his unbeaten 7 off 2 balls, helped MI reach 159/7.

For CSK, Anshul Kamboj was the pick of the bowlers with an impressive 3/32, breaking crucial partnerships. Noor Ahmad supported well with 2/26, while Jamie Overton and Ramakrishna Ghosh chipped in with a wicket each, ensuring MI were restricted to a below-par total.

Ruturaj Gaikwad and Kartik Sharma shine in controlled case

In response, CSK got off to a steady start despite losing Sanju Samson early for 11. Ruturaj Gaikwad then took charge of the innings, anchoring the chase with a composed 67 off 48 balls. His knock, laced with five boundaries and two sixes, provided the perfect foundation for CSK’s pursuit.

Urvil Patel played a quickfire cameo, scoring 24 off just 12 deliveries and maintaining the required tempo. However, it was Kartik Sharma who truly sealed the game alongside Gaikwad. The right-hander played a match-winning knock of 54 off 40 balls, combining patience with timely aggression, including four fours and three sixes.

The duo ensured there were no hiccups in the chase, stitching together a crucial partnership that took the game away from MI. CSK crossed the finish line comfortably with 11 balls to spare.

Mumbai Indians’ bowling unit struggled to contain the flow of runs. Jasprit Bumrah was the only bowler to make a notable impact, finishing with figures of 1/20 in his three overs. Allah Mohammad Ghazanfar picked up a wicket but was expensive, conceding 40 runs in his spell. Trent Boult and the rest of the attack failed to create sustained pressure, allowing CSK’s batters to dictate terms.
