Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad completed a four-player trade on November 5, 2026, with Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis moving to SRH while Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards headed to CSK. The deal has drawn considerable attention, particularly because none of the four players had standout IPL 2026 campaigns.
Former SRH batter Tirumalasetti Suman addressed the trade on YouTube, offering a clear explanation for why both franchises pushed through the exchange despite the underwhelming recent form of those involved. Suman pointed directly to Pat Cummins’ fitness situation as the driving force behind SRH’s decision to act.
“So, these 4 players didn’t perform in the IPL last year. But still, why did this trade happen? Because of both teams’ strengths and weaknesses. Looking at SRH, Pat Cummins’ availability is 50-50 for the IPL. So, I feel that this trade was compulsory to fill up that slot,” Suman said on his YouTube channel.
Cummins missed the first half of IPL 2026 with a lower back injury before returning mid-season, during which SRH finished third in the league stage. In June 2026, Cummins had told The Age that ‘something got to give’ regarding Australia’s packed 2027 international schedule, which includes the Ashes, the BGT and the ODI World Cup. No final decision on his IPL 2027 participation has been made, with a call expected closer to the retention deadline.
What does Khaleel Ahmed bring to SRH?
Khaleel Ahmed returns to SRH, a franchise he represented between 2018 and 2021, after being acquired from CSK at an existing fee of Rs 4.8 crore. His move back to Hyderabad gives SRH a left-arm seam option with proven powerplay credentials.
Khaleel featured in five matches for CSK during IPL 2026 before being ruled out with a right quadriceps injury. Prior to that, he had taken 15 wickets across 14 matches for CSK in IPL 2025, underlining his value as a wicket-taking option across a full season when fit.
Suman highlighted Khaleel’s specific role within SRH’s bowling plans, noting that his ability to bowl three overs with the new ball in the powerplay makes him a targeted acquisition rather than a general replacement.
“Khaleel Ahmed can bowl three overs with the new ball in the powerplay. And Nathan Ellis is a brilliant death-overs bowler. He bowls in the middle overs and death overs as well. His back-of-the-hand slower ball is also very good. So, I feel that this trade was made considering all these factors,” he added.
How do Nathan Ellis and the overseas arrivals fit into SRH’s plans?
Nathan Ellis joins SRH from CSK at an existing fee of Rs 2 crore. The Australian pacer is known for his effectiveness in the death overs and his variations in the middle overs, with his back-of-the-hand slower ball regarded as a particular weapon.
On the CSK side, England allrounder Liam Livingstone joins at a reduced fee of Rs 6 crore, down from the Rs 13 crore SRH had originally paid to acquire him. Australian batter Jack Edwards, who made his international debut before signing with SRH, moves to CSK at an existing fee of Rs 3 crore. Edwards had been ruled out of IPL 2026 with a foot injury. Both overseas players give CSK batting depth heading into the IPL 2027 cycle.
