Abhishek Sharma Hospitalised, Doubtful for Namibia Match, Bumrah Returns

India opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised in Delhi due to a stomach infection and has been there for the last two days. He is now a doubt for India’s T20 World Cup match against Namibia on Thursday.

Abhishek had the same issue during the match against the USA in Mumbai, where he did not come out to the field in the second innings after getting out for a first-ball duck.

India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said Abhishek was dealing with a stomach bug and the team was hoping he would recover in time.

If Abhishek misses the Namibia match, Sanju Samson could open, with Ishan Kishan already being the main wicketkeeper-batter option.

“Abhishek was admitted to a private hospital in Delhi due to a stomach infection. Doctors are running tests to find out the exact issue. It is still unclear if he will be discharged today. As of now, his chances of playing against Namibia look doubtful,” a BCCI source told PTI.

India also got positive news as Jasprit Bumrah is expected to play against Namibia after missing the USA match due to illness. Washington Sundar has also rejoined the squad after recovering from a side tear and trained in the nets in Delhi.

Abhishek Sharma’s T20 World Cup Debut Ends in Golden Duck Before Hospitalisation Scare

Abhishek Sharma had a rough start to the T20 World Cup 2026 when he got out for a golden duck in India’s opening match against the USA on February 7 in Mumbai.

He was dismissed first ball by Ali Khan in the second over after hitting straight to deep cover, and the catch was taken cleanly. Because Abhishek came into the tournament in strong form, the dismissal shocked many fans.

After he got out, fans on X reacted heavily, with some saying he is an “all or nothing” player, while others called him overrated and predicted his form could drop during the World Cup.

This match was also Abhishek’s T20 World Cup debut, and the golden duck gave him an unwanted record. He became the fifth Indian batter to get out for a duck on T20 World Cup debut, joining Gautam Gambhir, Ashish Nehra, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Hooda. Abhishek and Nehra are the only ones in that list to get a golden duck.

After his wicket, India struggled early and lost four wickets in the powerplay, reaching 46/4 after 6 overs.

Before the World Cup, Abhishek had been in great form against New Zealand, scoring 182 runs in 5 matches, averaging 45.50, striking at 249.31, with two fifties.

Ryan ten Doeschate Gives Fitness Updates on Jasprit Bumrah and Washington Sundar before the Namibia Match

India assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate gave fitness updates on Abhishek Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, and Washington Sundar before India’s T20 World Cup 2026 match vs Namibia in Delhi.

He said Washington Sundar has rejoined the squad after recovering from a side strain and will train with the team.

He confirmed Abhishek Sharma is still not fully fit because of a stomach issue and missed Tuesday’s training session, but the team is still hopeful he can be ready in time. Abhishek had played against the USA despite having an upset stomach and fever, where he got out for a golden duck.

He also said Jasprit Bumrah is feeling much better after missing the USA match due to viral fever. Bumrah has started bowling again after a 10-day break and will bowl once more in training.

Doeschate said the final call on Jasprit Bumrah, Abhishek Sharma, and Washington Sundar will likely be taken after Wednesday’s training session.
