What Is India’s Record Against South Africa In ICC T20 World Cup History?

After clean sweeping Group A with four wins in as many games, the Indian cricket team would fancy continuing their winning chariot in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 and begin their Super 8 journey with a bang.

The co-hosts will meet South Africa, who also bagged four victories in the group stage, on Sunday evening at the humongous Narendra Modi Stadium in the city of Ahmedabad.

Barring a scare provided by the USA in their first game, India went through their group opponents like a hot knife through butter.

The same can’t be said about Aiden Markram’s contingent, which almost threw away their victory against Afghanistan after being in the driver’s position, eventually with the match being decided in the second Super Over.

India and South Africa have met regularly in the men’s T20 World Cup, with the Men in Blue having a net positive record against the Saffers.

In fact, India have faced South Africa seven times in nine editions of the men’s T20 World Cup; only Pakistan have played against India more than the Proteas in this competition.

From the inaugural edition in 2007 to the previous edition in 2024, there have been 7 India vs South Africa matches so far in men’s ICC T20 World Cup history. Of these, India won 5 matches, and South Africa claimed two victories.

The most significant of these games was the final of the 2024 T20 World Cup, where Rohit Sharma’s side beat Aiden Markram’s team by only seven runs in Barbados to clinch the title. Both teams had entered the final without losing a single game, but the Proteas faltered in the final, with India ending their 11-year wait for an ICC trophy.

In their first meeting in Durban in 2007, India beat the hosts in a must-win game courtesy of a blazing fifty from a young Rohit Sharma.

In Nottingham in 2009, AB de Villiers’ 63 downed India, whereas a year later in Gros Islet, Suresh Raina’s century – the first by an Indian in T20Is – blew South Africa away.

The next IND vs SA fixture came in the 2012 T20 World Cup in Colombo. A dead rubber match turned into a last-ball thriller, with MS Dhoni’s XI prevailing by only one run.

Two years later, they clashed in the semi-final in Mirpur, where Virat Kohli’s majestic 72* (44) in a run chase of 173 took India into the final.

The two teams’ next encounter occurred in the T20 World Cup 2022 on a spicy MCG pitch. Lungi Ngidi’s four-for halted India at 133, which the Proteas eclipsed with two balls to spare.

Then came the epic finale of the 2024 edition in Barbados, where Virat Kohli’s 76 held a slipping Indian innings before the fast bowlers put on an outstanding show to defend 30 runs off the last 30 balls.
