The IND vs PAK game in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, which is scheduled for February 15 in Colombo, is under threat of not taking place at all following the order from the Pakistan government to boycott the match.
The PCB has invoked the Force Majeure clause in their email to the ICC to let the governing body know of their decision.
In reply, the ICC has come down severely on the PCB, demanding an explanation for invoking this particular clause and also pointing out that the PCB could face massive consequences if they don’t turn up against Suryakumar Yadav’s Indian team next Sunday at the R. Premadasa Stadium.
The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 kicked off on February 7, Saturday. Both India and Pakistan were in action against different opponents, Netherlands and USA respectively, and both claimed victories, though after getting a scare from the two Associate teams.
What Is Force Majeure Clause?
It is a legal clause that excuses a party from their obligation to fulfill the contract requirement only under an extraordinary event beyond the control of the party, such as a war, strike, riot, etc. Force Majeure is a french term, whose meaning is “superior force”.
Further, in ICC cricket events, a government order also comes under the Force Majeure clause. The PCB have reportedly stated this particular reason for the Pakistan team not playing against India.
This seems to have been well planned, as it was the Pakistan government that posted first on Twitter on February 1 that the Pakistan cricket team will boycott the IND vs PAK group clash on February 15. Then, PM Shehbaz Sharif said that this decision is being taken to show solidarity with Bangladesh, who were replaced by Scotland in the T20 World Cup after refusing to travel to India for their matches.
ICC replies to PCB, points out major consequences of a boycott
According to ESPNcricinfo, the ICC has responded to PCB with a lengthy email, asking what it has done to mitigate the Force Majeure event and also noting down the “sporting, commercial and governance implications” of boycotting the scheduled match against India.
The ICC informed the PCB of the “material damages” it could claim if the IND vs PAK match doesn’t go through, adding that the ICC would be within its constitutional rights to take “the extreme step of suspension and termination of membership if it deems there to have been a serious breach of obligations.”

As of the morning of February 8, the PCB’s stance is to boycott the match against India on February 15. Backroom negotiations and talks are reportedly ongoing between the ICC and the PCB, with further statements awaited from both parties in the coming days.

In case of a boycott by Pakistan, they will forfeit two points, while India will gain two points. There will most likely be huge financial implications for the PCB.
