Usman Khawaja Hints About Retirement: Veteran Australian opener Usman Khawaja has admitted that he is beginning to contemplate retirement, but insists he will leave the game on his own terms — and only when he feels the time is right.
Khawaja, 38, will play a key role in Australia’s attempt to retain their World Test Championship (WTC) title when they take on South Africa in the final at Lord’s later this week. While he remains the top run-scorer in the current WTC cycle with 1,422 runs, speculation around his future has started to grow.

Speaking to ICC Digital, Khawaja said he remains focused on enjoying the game and performing for the team.
“To me, age isn’t a big thing. As long as I’m enjoying the game, training hard, scoring runs, and helping the team, I have that drive,” he said. “I just try to enjoy every Test and every series. I’ll know when the time comes.”
The match at Lord’s will be Khawaja’s first WTC final without long-time opening partner David Warner, who retired earlier this year. Since Warner’s departure, Australia have tested several options at the top of the order, including Steve Smith, Matt Renshaw, Travis Head, and Cameron Bancroft. Marnus Labuschagne is reportedly in consideration for the role in the final.
Young opener Marcus Konstas, who impressed in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, has also joined the squad in London for training.
Khawaja, however, isn’t concerned about who will partner him at the top.
“Honestly, it doesn’t really change things for me. Opening is tough, and I’m focused on how to play against the bowlers,” he said. “Whoever is with me is likely thinking the same. We just need to work together to take on the attack.”
Despite the transition, Khawaja said the focus remains on contributing to the team’s goals.
“It’s been a bit quiet without Davey, but the energy is there. My job is to help whoever’s up there with me and keep doing what’s needed for the team.”
Australia will face South Africa in the WTC Final at Lord’s starting June 11.
