UCL 2025-26 Knockout Stage Explained: Which Teams Have Qualified

UCL 2025-26 Knockout Stage:- The UEFA Champions League 2025-26 league stage has come to an end, which means we are headed into the knockout stage of the competition. Out of the 36 teams in the tournament, 24 have advanced, while 12 have been eliminated.

Ever since the 2024-25 season, when the league expanded from 23 teams to 32, the format of the competition changed entirely. While the league phase underwent the most significant changes, the knockout stage has also undergone considerable changes. So, let’s look at how the playoffs will actually work this season.

Firstly, as a refresher, before the 2024-25 season, 32 teams qualified for the UEFA Champions League. These teams were distributed into eight groups of four teams each. After playing each other twice, which means six group stage games, the top two teams from each group made it into the round of 16, thus entering the knockout stage.

UCL 2025-26 Knockout Stage Explained

Now, all 36 teams are in the same pool. Before the tournament, the teams are put in nine different pools based on their recent form and stature. Each team, in the league stage, competes against two teams from each pool, ensuring games against teams of varying quality. This brings the number of games in the first round to eight.

With all teams being in the same table, the top eight finishing teams in the UCL league stage automatically qualify for the Round of 16. Meanwhile, teams from ninth to 24th make it into a qualifying round, which is just an extra buffer before the Round of 16.

There are now 16 teams in this qualifier round, but how does it work? A symmetrical pattern is used to draw out the qualifiers, ensuring the best-performing teams from the league stage face the worst-performing ones.

For example, teams finishing ninth and 10th are the highest finishing teams in this stagem while the teams finishing 23rd and 24th are the lowest. So, the team that finished ninth will either face the 23rd or the 24th finishing team, while the team that finished 10th will face the other one.

Now that all 16 teams will know who they will face, all of them will play two legs, and the winner at the end will make it to the Round of 16 alongside the top eight finishing teams.

A similar process takes place in the draw for the Round of 16, where the best teams will face off against the worst teams (on paper) coming from the knockout playoff.

SO, let’s see which teams qualified for the UCL 2025-26 knockout rounds –
