Shubman Gill Stresses Powerplay Improvement for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025

As Gujarat Titans gear up for IPL 2025, captain Shubman Gill has identified powerplay performance as a key area for improvement. Reflecting on last season’s struggles, Gill admitted that the team failed to capitalize on the crucial first six overs, leading to an underwhelming campaign where they finished eighth on the points table.

In IPL 2024, GT had the lowest powerplay run rate (7.72), with Gill and his opening partner Sai Sudharsan managing strike rates of 131.08 and 115.49, respectively, during the first six overs. Acknowledging the impact of this slow start, Gill took responsibility for his own approach and vowed to rectify past mistakes.

“Our goal is to maximize the powerplay by scoring as many runs as possible while keeping wickets in hand. Last season, we struggled not just in the powerplay but even beyond that, which ultimately cost us qualification,” Gill stated during GT’s press conference on March 19.

He emphasized his personal responsibility in ensuring a strong start for the team:

“As a batsman, it’s my duty to set the tone in the powerplay. That’s something I’m working on, and this season, we’re determined to make the necessary adjustments.”

Gujarat Titans Focused on Adaptability, Not Just Big Totals

While Gill is keen to boost GT’s scoring rate in the powerplay, he clarified that the team isn’t blindly chasing huge totals every game. Instead, their focus will be on reading the conditions and adapting accordingly.

“We’re not aiming for 300 runs every match. It’s about assessing the conditions and playing smart cricket. If the situation allows us to push for 240-260, we’ll go for it. But if the pitch demands a more measured approach, we must be prepared for that too,” Gill explained.

He highlighted that adaptability is the hallmark of a great team:

“If a team plays only one way, it struggles to adapt. The best teams adjust to different conditions and challenges. That’s what we want to achieve this season.”

With a renewed focus on aggressive yet calculated powerplay batting, Gujarat Titans aim to bounce back stronger in IPL 2025. Fans will be eager to see if Gill and his team can execute their vision and make a deep run in the tournament.
