MI vs DC Playoffs Qualification Scenario: Mumbai Indians (MI) will be hosting the Delhi Capitals (DC) on Wednesday, May 20, in a high-stakes encounter as they are the only two teams now fighting for the one remaining spot in the Mumbai Indians playoffs.
Three teams have secured their places in the playoffs, and five teams have been eliminated. The result of match 63, MI vs DC, which will be played at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, could confirm the fourth team to enter the playoffs if MI win, or if DC win, then their qualification will depend on the result of their last league games.
MI vs DC Playoffs Qualification Scenario
Both teams have played 12 matches each. MI have 14 points and DC have 13 points, and both of them will face the Punjab Kings for their last league game. If MI beat DC today, they will qualify for the playoffs as DC can then reach a maximum of 15 points.
If DC beat MI today, and then if they beat PBKS on May 24, DC will qualify with 17 points, as MI can reach a maximum of 16 points; however, even if DC beat MI but lose to PBKS, then MI will have the opportunity to enter the playoffs by beating PBKS on May 26. If DC beat MI, and then both lose their matches to PBKS, then DC will reach the playoffs.
A third scenario, though, has also emerged now, as there is a huge rain threat over the MI vs DC match in Mumbai. On Tuesday, the Indian Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert (the second of four levels) for Mumbai for the next four days.
If MI VS DC Is Washed Out, How Will It Affect Their Playoffs Qualification Scenario?
If the MI vs DC match is washed out, meaning both teams will take one point each, then MI will have 15 points and DC 14 points ahead of both teams’ last match against PBKS. In that case, even if DC manage a win over PBKS, MI will go through to the playoffs if they beat PBKS. Hence, for DC to qualify if this game is washed out, they have to win against PBKS and hope PBKS beat MI.
On Tuesday, the BCCI made amendments to their playing conditions for rain-interrupted matches for the rest of the tournament, including the MI vs DC match. The remaining matches will now have a buffer of 120 minutes (instead of the previous rule of 60 minutes) to complete the match.
The BCCI said that they have taken this decision considering the early onset of monsoon. Given that this game is under threat of rain and the high stakes it carries, DC co-owner Parth Jindal requested the IPL to shift it to a different venue as the IPL did with the RCB vs SRH game on May 23 from Bengaluru to Lucknow because of “unfavourable weather conditions” in Bengaluru.
Jindal wrote in his request to the BCCI, “The forecast in Mumbai is for heavy rains and there is a strong likelihood that the game will be washed out. Just as the game between RCB vs SRH has been moved out of Bengaluru in the quest for consistency and in the interest of the league it is my request that tomorrow’s game also be moved to a different location as we have known for the better part of 6 days that the forecast for 21st in Mumbai is for heavy showers.”
