Brendon McCullum’s Personal Life
Brendon grew up in Dunedin in a working-class family, the son of Otago cricketer Stuart McCullum. He showed talent in both rugby and cricket, captaining his high school first XV and even being picked ahead of Dan Carter for a South Island school rugby side. He played rugby as a defensive five-eighth, taking risks with confidence.
Despite his rugby promise, McCullum focused on cricket after being warned by Sir Richard Hadlee that continuing rugby could cost him a national cricket contract. He started young as a wicketkeeper-batsman, practicing advanced shots like the scoop in the nets. He scored a century for a lower-level team and moved up to play with older boys.
McCullum was also known for enjoying life off the field, sometimes partying hard. He once also faced suspension for organizing elaborate parties. His former mentor, Darryl Paterson, credited him with self-belief, loyalty, and leadership qualities. McCullum later became the first New Zealander to score a Test triple-century and eventually took on the role of England’s head coach.
