Wanindu Hasaranga is a Sri Lankan all-rounder who plays for the national team. He made history by taking Sri Lanka’s first T20 World Cup hat-trick in 2021 and also became the first Sri Lankan to take a hat-trick on his ODI debut.

He made a sensational ODI debut in July 2017 against Zimbabwe by taking a hat-trick, becoming the youngest and first leg-spinner to achieve this on debut. He led Sri Lanka to a 3–0 T20I series win over Pakistan in 2019, scoring record-breaking runs at number 8 in ODIs.

Hasaranga has been included multiple times in ICC Teams of the Year for ODIs and T20Is. In the 2022 Asia Cup, his all-round performance helped Sri Lanka win the title, earning him the player of the tournament. He became the second-fastest bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets in 2024 and was named captain of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Wanindu Hasaranga made a strong impression in Sri Lanka’s Under-19 teams in 2015 and 2016, including taking 3 for 34 in the 2016 Youth World Cup quarter-final against England. In domestic cricket, he scored 87 on his first-class debut for Ports Authority Cricket Club and accumulated 586 runs at an average of 39.06 in the 2017 Premier League Tournament while playing for Colombo Cricket Club. He earned a call-up to the national team in June 2017, where he made history by becoming the third debutant in ODI cricket to claim a hat-trick against Zimbabwe.

In the IPL, Hasaranga debuted in 2021 with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as a replacement player but went wicketless in two games. He had a breakthrough season in 2022, taking 26 wickets in 16 matches, the most by an RCB bowler that year. In 2023, he took nine wickets in eight games. He was released by RCB ahead of IPL 2024 and bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad, but missed the tournament due to a heel injury. In the 2025 mega auction, Rajasthan Royals purchased him for INR 5.25 crore.

As a bowler, he has taken four wickets in Tests, with best figures of 4/171 and one four-wicket haul. In ODIs, he has claimed 112 wickets, including five four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. In T20Is, he has taken 154 wickets, including five four-wicket hauls.

Wanindu Hasaranga’s Personal Life

Wanindu Hasaranga got married in March 2023 to his long-time girlfriend, Vindya, in an intimate ceremony at Water’s Edge Hotel in Battaramulla, Sri Lanka. The couple doesn’t have any children yet. His elder brother, Chaturanga de Silva, has also played for Sri Lanka in two T20Is and seven ODIs.

Wanindu Hasaranga was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for ₹2 crore in the IPL 2026 mini-auction. He was released by Rajasthan Royals ahead of the auction after recovering from a heel injury that had kept him out of the 2024 season. Hasaranga has played 37 IPL matches, taking 46 wickets at an average of 24.33 with an economy rate of 8.41, and his best figures are 5/18. With the bat, he has scored 81 runs at an average of 5.40.
