As the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season approaches, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are grappling with a major concern—fitness issues plaguing their pace attack. With their first match just days away, the franchise is closely monitoring the condition of its key fast bowlers, including Akash Deep, Avesh Khan, Mohsin Khan, and Mayank Yadav.

Injury Concerns in LSG Camp

Among these players, Mohsin Khan, retained before the 2025 auction, has already joined the squad. However, others like Mayank Yadav and Akash Deep are still recovering. Mayank, a crucial retention for LSG, is undergoing rehabilitation at the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) Centre of Excellence (CoE). While he has resumed bowling, he is yet to regain full match fitness. Meanwhile, Akash Deep, who sustained a back injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, remains a doubtful starter for the initial phase of the tournament.

Avesh Khan, on the other hand, has recovered from his fitness issues but has yet to link up with the team. Mohsin Khan, who recently returned to bowling, experienced a minor calf issue, adding to the team’s worries. With skipper Rishabh Pant at the helm, LSG faces some crucial decisions in the coming days regarding their pace attack.

Backup Options: Shardul Thakur & Shivam Mavi

To counter these injury setbacks, LSG has brought in experienced pacers Shardul Thakur and Shivam Mavi for practice sessions and match simulations. Both bowlers went unsold in the mega auction but could now secure contracts given LSG’s current situation.

LSG had opted for a predominantly Indian pace attack in the auction, with Shamar Joseph being the only overseas fast bowler in their lineup. While Mitchell Marsh could have provided an additional seam-bowling option, he is unlikely to contribute with the ball this season. This leaves the franchise in a tight spot, as securing the right bowling combination will be crucial for their campaign.

A Tough Decision for LSG Management

With Zaheer Khan leading the coaching unit, LSG’s think tank has had ample time to assess Thakur and Mavi. Both pacers have significant IPL experience and have played key roles for their respective domestic teams. Additionally, Thakur brings the advantage of being a handy lower-order batter, while Mavi has also demonstrated his ability to clear the ropes when needed.

However, the big question remains—will LSG take the gamble on players recovering from injuries, or will they opt for Thakur and Mavi to strengthen their bowling lineup? A final decision is expected soon, as the team gears up for a challenging season ahead.
