The Dhurandhars of the cricket industry are set to take center stage as the bumper 74-game IPL 2026 kicks off on Saturday with last season’s title winners, RCB, hosting SRH at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
It’s for the first time in the 19-edition history of the IPL that the red-clad RCB franchise walks into the tournament as the defending champion.
Captaining for the first time in the IPL, Rajat Patidar led RCB to their maiden IPL trophy last year. RCB finished second in the points table in the league stage in IPL 2025 and then beat Punjab Kings in Qualifier 1 and the final to fulfill the 18-year-long wait of RCB fans and Virat Kohli.
With the beginning of the new season on the horizon, let’s discuss or predict the four teams that seem more likely to qualify for the playoffs than the other six units.
Icecric News presents IPL 2026 Top 4 Prediction:
Mumbai Indians (MI)
Mumbai Indians walk into the IPL 2026 as arguably the most formidable, complete, and flawless squad of the 10 franchises. For starters, they have no injury or availability concerns at least at the start of the tournament, unlike other teams who are grappling with these issues.
After falling one step away from the final last season, MI bolstered their squad by adding Sherfane Rutherford, Shardul Thakur, Mayank Markande, and Quinton de Kock.
A dynasty of the IPL, Mumbai Indians have not reached an IPL final since 2020. Not only is MI likely to finish in the top two in the league stage, but Hardik Pandya’s side is a strong favorite to go all the way; any team with Bumrah and Pandya on its side would anyway be in a position for a podium conclusion.
2026 could well be the year MI inch ahead of CSK with a sixth IPL trophy in their kitty.
Rajasthan Royals (RR)
A new captain, a new ownership, and a rejigged squad – Rajasthan Royals would be desperate to win their second IPL trophy, with their first one coming way back in 2008.
Under Riyan Parag, RR have forged a well-rounded squad, the sum of parts seeming greater than the whole. Jaiswal and Suryavanshi could form the most destructive opening pair of the IPL 2026, while Archer, Bishnoi, and Sandeep Sharma could form a reliable bowling trio.
RR don’t have iconic names standing out on their side, but as a team, they have the mantle to qualify for the playoffs with collective effort.
Gujarat Titans (GT)
Though Gujarat Titans surprisingly traded Rutherford away to MI, they have only gained quality and experience with the purchase of Jason Holder in the auction, the former West Indies captain playing the best T20 cricket of his life in the past year.
GT finished third in the table last season; all they need is Rashid Khan to be back to his best and they have the ingredients to get their hands on their second IPL title.
Punjab Kings (PBKS)
In the auction, PBKS didn’t need to do much; they bought Cooper Connolly and Ben Dwarshuis, both of whom are unlikely first-choice starters. The only position that needed a replacement in their best XI was that of Josh Inglis, and the Ponting-Iyer combo has Mitch Owen, Marcus Stoinis, and Azmatullah Omzazai for that No. 3 spot.
The success of PBKS this year would once again heavily depend on their Indian batsmen – Priyansh Arya, Prabhsimran Singh, Iyer, Nehal Wadhera, and Shashank Singh – who all had a terrific season last time around.
Punjab Kings fell only six runs short in the IPL 2025 final against RCB. They seem to be in a good place to cross that final hurdle in IPL 2026.
