AB de Villiers Reveals Why Virat Kohli Asked Him to Stop Saying ‘E Sala Cup Namde’

The iconic Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) chant, ‘E Sala Cup Namde’, which translates to “This year, the cup will be ours” in Kannada, has become one of the most famous slogans in IPL history. However, former RCB superstar and South African legend AB de Villiers recently revealed that Virat Kohli personally asked him to stop using the phrase.

Kohli’s Message to AB de Villiers

RCB boasts one of the most passionate fan bases in the league and has set several records over the years. However, despite reaching the IPL final three times, they have yet to win the coveted title in their 18-year history.

Speaking on the Star Sports Press Room, de Villiers shared an interesting exchange with his former teammate, Kohli.

“I honestly said those words the other day, and I got a direct message from Virat. He told me, ‘Please just stop doing that now.’ So, I got into a bit of trouble,” de Villiers admitted.

Why RCB Hasn’t Won an IPL Title Yet

The Proteas legend also discussed RCB’s long wait for a championship, despite having some of the best players in the world. He highlighted the tough nature of the IPL, explaining that winning the title requires much more than just star power.

“I am exhausted saying that the trophy is coming this season. The IPL is incredibly difficult to win. There are 10 world-class teams, each of which could possibly win a World Cup, let alone the IPL. Many factors come into play—travel, different team strategies, injuries. The teams that manage to keep their energy levels up towards the end of the tournament usually emerge victorious.”

He further emphasized the importance of making the most of home advantage, which has played a crucial role in teams lifting the trophy.

Will This Be RCB’s Year?

Despite Kohli’s reluctance to use the slogan, de Villiers remains hopeful that RCB could finally win their maiden title in the 18th season.

“I hope that this is the year—season 18, with number 18 (Kohli) leading the charge. If it happens, I will be there to lift that trophy with Virat.”

RCB fans will be eagerly waiting to see if their team can break the long-standing jinx and finally bring the IPL trophy home.
