Fans React To Virat Kohli Test Retirement

Fans React To Virat Kohli Test Retirement: Virat Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on the morning of May 12, 2025. The announcement, while not out of nowhere, was somewhat surprising as it came without the news leaking in the hours before. Kohli just took to Instagram and posted the announcement.

Reports had emerged in the days before that Virat wanted to retire from white-ball cricket for the Indian Cricket Team. These reports emerged soon after Test captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the format. While rumours emerged that the BCCI was trying to talk the modern-day great down from taking this decision, apparently it wasn’t so.

Kohli posted to his Instagram to announce his retirement. In the post, which had a picture of himself from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy a few months ago, in which he scored his last Test 100, he wrote this in the caption:

“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life. There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.”

I’m walking away with a heart full of gratitude — for the game, for the people I shared the field with, and for every single person who made me feel seen along the way. I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off,” he wrote.

The 36-year-old retires from Test cricket after playing 123 matches. In this time, he scored 9230 runs at an average of 46.85. He also scored 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries. He also has the joint-fourth-most double centuries in Test cricket with seven.

Kohli is arguably the greatest batter of the 21st century. While his speciality lies in limited-overs cricket, Kohli has been an absolute beast in the Tests in the past, especially before 2020, at which point he had 27 centuries in 86 Tests and was en route to breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 51 hundreds in the format.

But now, only the memories remain. The iconic 2014 tour to Australia, the 2018 tour to England, and the tour to South Africa in the same year.

Fans React To Virat Kohli Test Retirement

Naturally, social media has been reacting to the devastating news, as Kohli’s retirement from Tests comes just a month or so before a challenging five-Test tour to England. Fans have been quite emotional as they react to Virat’s retirement from the Test format, shy of the 10000-run mark.

Some people also highlighted how the simultaneous retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma from Test cricket will impact Indian cricket.

Having already retired from T20I after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, the pair of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will now only represent the Indian Cricket Team in the ODI format, one that is decreasing in popularity year by year.
