Ayush Mhatre is an Indian cricketer who plays domestic cricket for Mumbai and plays in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings. He started playing cricket when he was five years old. When he was 15, he began focusing seriously on becoming a professional cricketer. To follow his cricket dream, he used to travel around 80 km one way by train from Virar to Churchgate near Wankhede Stadium.

At 17, he made his first-class debut for Mumbai. He scored his first first-class century in his third match of the 2024/25 Ranji Trophy season. On the last day of 2024, he scored 181 off 117 balls in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. This made him the youngest player to score 150+ in a List-A innings, breaking the record previously held by Yashasvi Jaiswal. 

He went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. Later, he got a chance after CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad got injured, and he was called up during the tournament. His first IPL match was also his first-ever T20 match. It was played in Mumbai against the Mumbai Indians. In that game, he became CSK’s youngest-ever player and scored 32 runs in just 15 balls.

Ayush Mhatre became the 6th Indian captain to win the ICC Under-19 World Cup, joining the list of title-winning captains like Mohammed Kaif (2000), Virat Kohli (2008), Unmukt Chand (2012), Prithvi Shaw (2018), and Yash Dhull (2022). He led India to their record-extending 6th U19 World Cup title in 2026.

In the U19 World Cup 2026, he scored 214 runs in 7 matches, with an average of 30.57 and a strike rate of 113.22, including three fifties. He also took 7 wickets at an average of 12.42, including a three-wicket haul against Pakistan.

In domestic cricket, he made his first-class debut at age 17 for Mumbai in the 2024–25 Irani Cup. He later scored his maiden first-class century of 176 against Maharashtra in the 2024–25 Ranji Trophy. He also became the youngest player to score 150+ runs in men’s List A cricket, breaking the previous record held by Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Ayush Mhatre’s Personal Life

Ayush Mhatre is from a middle-class family in Virar. He joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 as an injury replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. He made his CSK debut at 17 years old against the Mumbai Indians on April 20, 2025, becoming the youngest player to debut for CSK.

His father’s name is Yogesh Mhatre. He supported Ayush throughout his journey and regularly travelled with him for matches. Ayush’s coach, Prashant Shetty, said Yogesh used to manage his work as a banker while also handling long travel for Ayush’s cricket. According to the coach, Yogesh even left his banking job about a year earlier to spend more time on Ayush. Ayush has faced depression and fitness issues, but managed to overcome them.

Ayush Mhatre’s IPL contract with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) is worth ₹30 lakhs per season. This salary is the same for both the 2025 and 2026 seasons, because he was signed as a replacement for Ruturaj Gaikwad. His yearly ₹30 lakh contract comes to around ₹2.5 lakhs per month.
