Gunther World Championships: A Detailed Look

Walter Hahn, aka Gunther, is an Austrian professional wrestler. He is signed to WWE and performs on the Raw brand under the ring name Gunther. He is nicknamed “Der Ringgeneral” or “The Ring General.” He is a two-time World Heavyweight Champion and the longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental Champion and NXT United Kingdom Champion in company history.

Hahn was born in Vienna on 20 August 1987. He developed an interest in professional wrestling after watching taped WWF shows from 1992 to 1996 and matches from promotions such as All Japan Pro Wrestling. He later began collecting wrestling tapes himself. He attended catch wrestling shows in Vienna and watched wrestlers such as Fit Finlay, William Regal, and Robbie Brookside. He also played football as a goalkeeper but stopped around the age of 15. During the Attitude Era, he returned to watching wrestling and began training in Vienna under Michael Kovac at Wrestling School Austria. His training included amateur wrestling, and Kovac offered private lessons for a fee.

After losing the Intercontinental Championship to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania XL, Gunther became the 24th King of the Ring. He won the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2024. He lost the title to Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41 but regained it in June. During his second reign, he defeated Bill Goldberg in Goldberg’s retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event XL. He later lost the championship to CM Punk at SummerSlam. After that, he won the Last Time Is Now tournament and defeated John Cena in Cena’s retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event XLII.

Gunther is a two-time World Heavyweight Champion in WWE. He won his first World Heavyweight Championship in 2025 after a major run that started following WrestleMania XL. He entered the King of the Ring tournament and won it by defeating Randy Orton at King and Queen of the Ring. This win earned Gunther a World Heavyweight Championship match at SummerSlam.

At SummerSlam on 3 August, Gunther defeated Damian Priest to win the World Heavyweight Championship, marking his first world title in WWE. He made his first title defense at Bash in Berlin on 31 August by defeating Randy Orton again, and the two shook hands afterward as a sign of respect. 

Gunther successfully defended the World Heavyweight Championship against Damian Priest at Survivor Series WarGames on 30 November, with interference from Finn Bálor. After winning the Royal Rumble, Uso chose Gunther as his opponent for WrestleMania 41. On 19 April at Night 1 of WrestleMania 41, Gunther lost the title to Jey Uso by submission, ending his first reign at 259 days.

On the 9 June episode of Raw, Gunther defeated Jey Uso in a rematch by technical submission to win his second World Heavyweight Championship. A week later, on Raw, he was confronted by Goldberg, leading to a match at Saturday Night’s Main Event XL on 12 July. Gunther defeated Goldberg by technical submission in what was Goldberg’s retirement match. On Night 1 of SummerSlam on 2 August, Gunther lost the title to CM Punk, ending his second reign at 54 days.
