The Harmanpreet Kaur-led side lifted India’s first-ever ICC Womens World Cup trophy after they beat Laura Wolvaardt’s South Africa in a memorable final on Sunday in Navi Mumbai.
India were boosted by outstanding all-round performances from Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma. Verma bagged the Player of the Match award in the final for her 87 (78) & 2/36. Deepti scored 58 (58) and picked up 5/39 in the final, including the last Protea wicket that sealed the title for India.
Deepti was named the Player of the Tournament for her efforts of 215 runs with the bat at an average of 30 and a strike rate of 90 and 22 wickets with the bat, the highest in the tournament.
The likes of Deepti, Harmanpreet, and Smriti Mandhana had their redemption arc complete, having been part of the 2017 World Cup final defeat against England by a small margin of nine runs!
With her terrific display in the final, Deepti created three historic records, which hadn’t even been made before in men’s cricket.
3 Individual Records Deepti Sharma Created In ICC Womens World Cup Final vs South Africa
1. First Indian to take a five-fer in a World Cup final
Be it men’s or women’s, Deepti Sharma became the first Indian to pick up a five-wicket haul in an ICC World Cup final.
Previously, the best bowling figures by an Indian in a World Cup final were 3/12 by Mohinder Amarnath in the 1983 World Cup final against England at Lord’s. Deepti’s figures of 5/39 are now the best bowling figures by an Indian bowler in a World Cup final, men’s or women’s.
2. First player to hit a fifty and pick up five wickets in a World Cup final
Now, this is actually insane. There has never been an instance of a player scoring a fifty and also picking up a five-wicket haul in an ICC World Cup final, men’s or women’s.
There have been 36 instances of a batsman scoring 50 or more in men’s ICC World Cup finals and 19 in ICC Women’s World Cup finals. But none of them picked up more than one wicket—England’s Lisa Sthalekar claimed one wicket in the 2005 final.
However, that record was broken not once but twice in the India vs South Africa ICC Women’s World Cup final, first by Shafali Verma, who took two wickets, and then by Deepti, who ran through the South Africans with a five-fer.
Deepti became the first player in the history of ODI cricket to hit a fifty and claim a five-wicket haul in a World Cup final, men’s or women’s.
3. First player to score over 200 runs and pick over 20 wickets in a World Cup
In the final, Deepti scored 58 runs and snared five wickets. That helped her finish the tournament with 215 runs and 22 wickets.
Deepti Sharma became the first player, man or woman, to score more than 200 runs and bag more than 20 wickets in a single ICC World Cup tournament.
South Africa’s Lance Klusener is the men’s cricketer with the highest wickets—17—in a single edition of a World Cup among players who have scored over 200 runs in a tournament for his unbelievable show in the 1999 World Cup. India’s Yuvraj Singh had a staggering 2011 World Cup, where he amassed 360 runs and picked up 15 wickets.
Yet, neither of them could do the double of 200 runs and 20 wickets that Deepti achieved in the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.
