India Squad for Womens ODI World Cup 2025: India will mount their ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 campaign at home without Shafali Verma. The 21-year-old opener, once seen as the face of India’s batting future, has been omitted from the 15-member squad named on Tuesday.
Renuka Thakur is back in the squad after being out due to a foot injury to lead the pace attack. She will mark her international comeback in a preparatory ODI series against Australia next month before the World Cup begins on September 30, when hosts India face Sri Lanka.
The squad is otherwise stable, with Amanjot Kaur included despite missing the Australia ODIs due to a back niggle. Sayali Satghare, in turn, has been drafted as cover for that series only.
Verma’s exclusion comes despite recent runs for India A in Australia and a promising T20I comeback in England. Chief selector Neetu David, asked to explain, insisted: “She is in our system … she will serve India in the future.” The selectors have instead preferred Pratika Rawal, the 22-year-old opener who has scored 703 runs at 54.07 since debuting last December, including match-shaping innings against England and South Africa.
Jemimah Rodrigues, overlooked in 2022, makes her first World Cup, alongside Harleen Deol, Amanjot, Arundhati Reddy, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani and Kranti Goud. Goud, 23, forced her way in with six wickets in the last ODI in England.
Dropped from the touring party in England are Tejal Hasabnis and Satghare, neither of whom played a match. Hasabnis, handed a middle-order role in the India A tour of Australia, managed only 28 runs in three innings.
India, eight-time Asia Cup winners but still in search of their first ODI World Cup, have six games scheduled in the group stage.
