India squad for Asia Cup: Following the end of the India vs England Test series, the attention of the Indian cricket team and their fans now moves to September’s Asia Cup. That is because India’s white-ball tour to Bangladesh, which was scheduled for August, has been called off.
This means that the Indian players will go into the Asia Cup without any recent white-ball international experience. India’s last limited-overs cricket happened in January, when they hosted England, which was followed by the IPL.
The upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE will be played with a view to the T20 World Cup next year at home. And while India are the defending T20 World Cup champions, several of the key members from its title-winning squad from 2024—Rohit Sharma, the then-captain, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja—are not around anymore in the T20I side.
Under head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav, India have won four T20I series in a row.
The Asia Cup 2025 will be played from September 9 to 28 in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. 8 teams have been divided into two groups of four each. The top two teams from each group will progress to the Super 4 round, from where the top two will clash in the final.
India and Pakistan are in Group A, along with the UAE and Oman. Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong.
The BCCI is expected to announce India’s squad for the Asia Cup 2025 by the end of August. Over the last year, with Tests being the prioritised format, some players like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Jasprit Bumrah have not featured in T20Is.
In their absence, others, especially the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma, have cemented their places in the side through the sheer weight of match-winning runs. So, the dilemma for the selectors and the management will be there—to be fair as well as consider the pecking order when they pick the squad for the Asia Cup.
Interestingly, while the T20 World Cup squad will have to be of 15 players, India can pick more players in their squad for the Asia Cup; they did pick 17 players in their Asia Cup squad in 2023.
So, here we have picked up 17 players who are the front-runners to be named in India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad. Since we’re looking to pick India’s best possible squad, we have assumed that Jasprit Bumrah will feature in the tournament as he will be getting an entire month’s rest in August.
As the tournament is in the UAE, we have picked up three pacers plus Hardik Pandya as the pace-bowling all-rounder, and three spinners plus Axar Patel as the spin-bowling all-rounder.
Seeing their tremendous form, we believe that both Mohammed Siraj and Shreyas Iyer could return to the T20I setup.
