Hardik Pandya on Impact Player Rule: All-Rounders Must Be Complete to Secure a Spot

Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya believes that with the Impact Player rule extended for three more years, only true all-rounders will find a spot in the playing XI. Speaking at a media interaction ahead of the IPL season, Pandya emphasized the growing challenge for all-rounders to secure their place in a team that can swap in a specialist batter or bowler as needed.

BCCI Extends Impact Player Rule Despite Concerns

Despite reservations from top Indian players, including Rohit Sharma, who argued that the rule hinders the development of all-rounders, the BCCI has decided to retain it until at least 2027. Rohit and others have pointed out that teams now opt for extra batters or bowlers instead of all-rounders, limiting opportunities for players who excel in both disciplines.

“If you are not a complete 50-50 all-rounder, it’s tough to find a place in the XI,” Pandya admitted. “Going forward, things may change, but right now, teams need a clear plan to develop all-rounders over the years.”

Pandya to Miss MI’s Opener, Suryakumar to Lead

Pandya will miss Mumbai Indians’ opening match against Chennai Super Kings due to a one-match suspension for an over-rate offense last season. Suryakumar Yadav will step in as captain for the crucial fixture.

Sitting alongside Pandya, MI’s head coach Mahela Jayawardene weighed in on the debate surrounding the Impact Player rule. “It creates new challenges. A pure all-rounder has a specific role, but teams often replace them with a specialist bowler or batter. We’ll have to see how this affects the game long-term,” said the Sri Lankan legend.

Hardik Pandya Confident in MI’s Revival After Tough Season

Pandya’s return to Mumbai Indians last season was far from smooth, with the five-time champions finishing at the bottom of the table. Adding to the challenge, he faced boos from home fans. Despite a four-season title drought, Pandya remains optimistic and carries the confidence of winning two ICC trophies with Team India in the past year.

“Playing for India is always a matter of pride. Winning two trophies means a lot, and that joy will carry forward to the IPL,” Pandya said. “The last four seasons haven’t been great for MI, but this year, we will approach the tournament with joy and togetherness.”

Reflecting on his journey, he noted his constant evolution as a cricketer. “Every year, there’s a new version of me. If you want to call it ‘Hardik 3.0,’ there will be passion, grit, and challenges, which I love.”

As a leader, Pandya aims to mentor young players. “My focus is to help the younger guys navigate challenges and add value to the team,” he said. Regarding his own batting position, he added, “I play according to the situation, not a fixed number.”

MI’s Core Group Remains Key to Success

Despite recent struggles, Mumbai Indians have retained their core players, including Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah. The team also strengthened its squad by bringing in Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar.

Jayawardene emphasized the importance of squad stability. “Our core group has been vital in all our title wins. Winning the IPL isn’t easy, but experience matters. Boult has been crucial to our success, and we’re excited to have him back.”

However, Mumbai faces a tough challenge in the opening game against Chennai Super Kings, a fixture they haven’t won since 2012. Jayawardene confirmed that the playing XI will be decided closer to the match, considering the absence of Bumrah and Pandya.
