The former Inter and Udinese manager, holidaying with his family on a beach in Puglia, intervened after spotting two girls, aged 17 and 19, caught in a rip current and struggling to stay afloat. Acting on instinct as a lifeguard raised the alarm, Stramaccioni raced into the sea without equipment or hesitation.
“The lifeguard was alone and without a rope or life vest,” Stramaccioni later told reporters. “He asked me to go for the older girl. I tried to keep her calm. The waves were strong. She was panicking.”
Once the first girl was brought to safer water, Stramaccioni turned to assist the second, younger, more distressed, and beginning to go under. “She kept disappearing,” he said. “She’d swallowed a lot of water. I was scared too. She thought she was going to die.”
The pair eventually made it close enough to shore for ropes to be thrown from the rocks. But even then, the danger hadn’t passed. The younger girl had to be kept afloat until help arrived, with Stramaccioni doing much of the work alone. “At one point, she began to drag me under,” he recalled. “I told myself, if she were my wife or daughter, someone would do the same.”
Pressed on the heroics, Stramaccioni, 48, demurred. “I’m not a hero,” he said. “I just did what anyone should do.”
The rescue has drawn quiet admiration in Italian media, but Stramaccioni has remained insistent that the episode was not about him. “My son asked me later, ‘What if you’d died?’ I didn’t know what to say.”
