India playing 11 vs England Announced India made four key changes in their playing 11 for the final test at Oval against England. While Jasprit Bumrah rested, Karun Nair got a call-back, a second chance, that the Vidabha batter must capitalise.
In line with the team’s workload strategy outlined before the series, Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the final Test, putting the onus on Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep to lead India’s pace attack.
The most debated selection, however, concerns the return of Karun Nair in place of all-rounder Shardul Thakur, a move that strengthens the batting but reduces the bowling depth. Nair, whose second innings in Test cricket resumed this series after a hiatus of over eight years, has managed just 131 runs in six innings. His reinstatement, despite modest returns, comes at the cost of Thakur, who has a respectable record at The Oval, including three half-centuries.
The pitch, tinged with green, might have justified a fourth seamer or a seam-bowling all-rounder. Instead, India opted for an extra specialist batter, perhaps indicating their concerns about a fragile middle order and an unwillingness to gamble with Shardul’s inconsistent bowling. The choice also reiterates India’s preference for control rather than pursuit, a familiar refrain in overseas finales.
Former vice-captain Cheteshwar Pujara, speaking on broadcast duties, expressed reservations: “You need 20 wickets to win a Test. Without Bumrah, and with just three seamers, that becomes tougher. You can’t play four seamers because they can’t bat, but that’s why you carry someone like Shardul. He’s done the job before, especially in these conditions.”
England, meanwhile, won the toss and elected to field first. The hosts are without captain Ben Stokes due to a shoulder injury, with Ollie Pope taking over leadership duties.
With the series delicately poised and both sides carrying fresh faces, the Oval Test has the feel of a decider shaped more by constraints than conviction. Whether India’s risk-averse reshuffle delivers the right outcome remains to be seen.
