KKR Knocked Out Of Playoff Race: While the IPL 2025 technically resumed on May 17, everyone—fans, broadcasters, and most of all, the players—was left disappointed as the RCB vs KKR match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium ended without a ball being bowled because non-stop rain in Bengaluru, especially at the venue, on Saturday evening didn’t allow even the toss to take place.
Even a five-over match was not possible, and the game was called off at around 10.23 PM.
This game was a highly anticipated match. Not only was the IPL resuming after the break of one week due to the Indo-Pak border tension, but it was also Virat Kohli’s first match since announcing his Test retirement.
With Kohli now officially in the last phase of his career, wherein his appearances on the field would be few and far between—India is not scheduled to play ODIs until August—fans would want to get every possible glimpse of the remainder of his career.
To pay tribute to Kohli, a huge number of fans had filled the Chinnaswamy Stadium wearing white Test jerseys. But alas, they couldn’t see their superstar cricketer play tonight as rain played spoilsport.
Heavily gutted would be the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) players, management, and owners as rain denied them a chance to keep their tournament alive. Despite taking one point from this washout, KKR now have no chance to proceed to the next round.
Are KKR Knocked Out Of Playoff Race After RCB vs KKR Match Was Washed Out?
Defending champions KKR, who have 12 points in 13 games, stand eliminated from the playoff race after the RCB vs KKR match in Bengaluru on May 17 was washed out. Ajinkya Rahane’s team can only reach 14 points at maximum if they win their last game, which will not be enough for them or any team to qualify for the playoffs.
On the other hand, after gaining one point from this fixture, RCB displaced Gujarat Titans from the top of the points table and now sit in the numero uno spot with 17 points and two games in hand.
RCB are all but in the playoffs. The only way RCB can fail to qualify for playoffs despite having 17 points will be if GT and MI finish with 18 points (or more in GT’s case), and there’s a three-way tie featuring RCB, PBKS, and DC, bringing it down to NRR.
RCB will officially qualify for the playoffs if either PBKS or DC lose their match on Sunday, which is a double-header.
From this point, Rajat Patidar’s team will be targeting a top-two finish. They will have competition with GT and PBKS for a top-two finish.
