MI Likely To Lose 3 Overseas Stars For IPL 2025 Playoffs

MI Likely To Lose 3 Overseas Stars: After a halt of one week, the IPL 2025 will resume on May 17, with the final slated for June 3. The tournament was paused last week amid the border tensions between India and Pakistan. But now the BCCI has gotten the clearance from the government to resume the competition.

17 matches – 13 league games, including the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match, which was abandoned after 10.1 overs in Dharamsala, and four playoffs – will be played across six venues: Bengaluru, Jaipur, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad.

The 13 league matches will be played from May 17 to May 27, and the playoffs from May 29 to June 3. However, the reschedule will put strains on the team management and captains of multiple franchises as they will be losing some overseas players due to international commitments.

The overseas players had previously gotten NOCs from their national boards until May 25, the date of the final slotted in the original schedule. Now that the tournament will be completed a week later, the franchises are not guaranteed the availability of their foreign players as international cricket will resume this month.

Among the franchises that could be severely hit by the unavailability of overseas stars is the Mumbai Indians, who could lose as many as three key foreign players.

Ryan Rickelton, Corbin Bosch, and Will Jacks are three Mumbai Indians who may not feature in the playoffs. Rickelton and Bosch are named in South Africa’s squad for the ICC WTC Final, which is scheduled to assemble in England on May 31. This means that they will be available for MI’s two remaining league stage matches and potentially for Qualifier 1, which is on May 29, should MI reach it.

Meanwhile, Will Jacks has been named in England’s ODI and T20I squads that will host West Indies from May 29. So Jacks, too, is likely to be available until the end of the league stage, but his availability for Qualifier 1 and beyond is in doubt.

Enoch Nkwe, CSA’s director of national teams, said on this matter, “It is an individual decision, obviously, to return or to play or continue. But one thing we’ve made it clear, and we are finalising that with IPL and BCCI, is sticking to our original plan when it comes to the WTC preparations. Obviously, with May 26 being the latest for the Test guys to come back.”

An ECB spokesperson was quoted by ESPNcricinfo as saying, “No Objection Certificates have been granted based on the original IPL dates, so we’ll need to review any potential extensions, particularly in relation to any clash with the final white-ball squad.”

Mumbai Indians are currently fourth in the points table, having won seven games out of 12. The three above-mentioned players have made important contributions for MI so far.

Rickelton has scored 336 runs at a strike rate of 153 with three fifties. Jacks has scored 195 runs and taken five wickets. Bosch has featured in only a couple of games, in which he bowled tidily and whacked 47 runs at a strike rate of 146.
