Is Virat Kohli the Greatest Test Captain of India

Virat Kohli the Greatest Test Captain of India: On May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli officially retired from Test cricket. His decision comes just days after Rohit Sharma also quit the longest format. It is believed that both senior players, who are already retired from T20Is, have stepped away from Test cricket to put more energy into ODI cricket and their fitness as they target the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa.

Kohli bows out as India’s fourth-highest run-getter with 9230 runs at an average of 46.85, hitting 30 centuries in his 14-year career, converting seven of those into double hundreds.

As much as Virat Kohli the batsman will be missed, fans will fondly miss the captain and leader that the Delhi lad was for his Test team.

In 2015, Kohli took over the Indian Test team that had been struggling for form and consistency, and by the end of his tenure, India were an unbeatable team at home and regularly won Test matches, and even Test series, away from home.

Kohli presided over for the majority of India’s unprecedented 12-year home winning streak from 2013 to 2024. In this period, Kohli became the first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia in 2018/19 as India conquered the Aussies Down Under.

He is hailed by many as India’s greatest Test captain, and the stats back up this claim.
