When Will IPL 2025 Restart? IPL 2025 Restart Date Revealed

When Will IPL 2025 Restart? The BCCI has been quick to outline plans to resume the IPL 2025 and is optimistic that the tournament will resume soon.

The IPL 2025 was halted on May 8 when the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was abandoned due to “significant technical failure,” which essentially was due to the rising border tension between India and Pakistan. The BCCI then suspended the tournament for a week as India and Pakistan engaged in a warlike situation.

A ceasefire was announced on the night of May 10. Soon after, the BCCI officials began taking steps to complete the rest of the tournament.

The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, told Cricbuzz,

“The BCCI suspended the IPL yesterday for a period of seven days, and today, we are on the second day with five more days left. The BCCI is closely monitoring the evolving situation and developments and will take a call on IPL resumption after consulting all stakeholders of IPL and the concerned government authorities.”

Excluding the abandoned PBKS vs DC match, there are 12 more league games left to play, which will be followed by the four playoff matches, including the final – all in, 16 matches are yet to be completed in the IPL 2025. There is also a possibility that the BCCI may replay the PBKS vs DC match.

“In the next 48 hours, we will begin consultations with the franchises, broadcasters, sponsors, and the state associations slated to host the remaining matches before crystallising a decision on the league’s resumption.

“Given the importance of IPL at this juncture, it will also be prudent and necessary to take the nod of the Government of India before finalising the time for its restart. BCCI will duly announce the date of IPL restart once the whole process is over in due course of time,” the BCCI secretary added.

When Will IPL 2025 Restart?

According to ESPNcricinfo, “the IPL could start as soon as the following weekend—around May 15—subject to Indian government permission.”

Apparently, the board is looking for a window of 12-14 days to conduct the remainder of the 16 matches, and that could mean adding a few extra double-header days.

Some overseas players have already flown out of India and are expected to return in the coming days. Reportedly, some franchises have asked their staff and management not to leave the country as of now since the tournament could resume soon.

One issue that the BCCI and the franchises will be facing is the potential absence of some overseas players if the tournament extends beyond May 25, the date of the final originally, as there will be bilateral series after the IPL and also the ICC World Test Championship final between Australia and South Africa.

It is also believed that the BCCI is looking to play the rest of the season in only three venues, for which Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad are shortlisted. Seven teams are alive in the playoff race, while Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are out of contention.
