IPL Impact Player Rule Confirmed to Stay for the 2027 Season

The Impact Player rule will remain part of the Indian Premier League for the 2027 season, with no change expected before the upcoming player auction scheduled for next month. No official communication has yet been sent to franchises, but the understanding among those involved in auction-based planning is that the rule stays.

The IPL Governing Council had sought the views of franchises on the rule back in August 2026. While commercial stakeholders backed its continuation, several cricketers quietly raised concerns. Despite that mixed feedback, the direction has settled firmly in favour of keeping the rule in place for at least one more season.

“At least four teams had informed IPL that withdrawal of the rule this late would hamper their strategy significantly,” an IPL official was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The timing of any potential change has also emerged as a major consideration, particularly with franchises already planning their squads for the upcoming mini-auction.

“The next edition will be the last before a mega auction cycle and a rule change now would be too late for the teams. It’s unlikely there would be any change,” the official added.

How has the Impact Player rule changed the way IPL is played?

The rule was first trialled during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in the 2022-23 season before being formally introduced into the IPL from 2023 onwards. Its effect on the game has been measurable. Across the first 15 IPL seasons up to and including 2022, there were only 133 instances of a team posting 200 or more runs in an innings. In the four editions since the rule came into force in 2023, that number has jumped to 195.

The scoring rate across the league has followed a similar upward curve. In IPL 2008, the runs-per-over average stood at 7.48. By 2022, that figure had climbed to 8.54. In IPL 2026, the average runs per over reached 9.85, reflecting how significantly the rule has reshaped batting approaches across the competition.

Squads have been assembled with the rule firmly in mind. Sunrisers Hyderabad are among the sides whose squad construction has been shaped around the Impact Player provision, leaning into all-out attacking batting intent and building depth accordingly. Had the rule not existed, teams would have needed to shore up their bowling considerably rather than banking on batting depth as a strategic cushion.

Which players could be affected by the rule continuing into IPL 2027?

The continuation of the rule carries specific implications for certain players. Under the Impact Player provision, a specialist batter who misses part of a match through injury can still be introduced as the Impact Player substitute, which changes how squads manage fitness concerns during a tournament.

Rohit Sharma missed five matches during IPL 2026 due to a hamstring injury, and the rule’s presence meant his potential return as an Impact Player remained a consideration throughout that period. Similarly, MS Dhoni generated considerable interest during IPL 2026, with the possibility of him returning as an Impact Player keeping attention on Chennai Super Kings even when his participation was uncertain.

The rule’s continuation into 2027 means such scenarios will remain a live part of franchise planning and fan interest heading into the next auction cycle.
