Mumbai Indians (MI) have announced a major change to their coaching setup ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. The five-time champions and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have mutually decided to part ways, bringing an end to his tenure in the role after ten seasons of association with the franchise.
The decision comes after a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, in which MI finished ninth with only four wins. With the retention deadline approaching in mid-November, the franchise will now look for a new head coach as it prepares for the next season.
Mahela Jayawardene steps down after a decade with MI
Mumbai Indians confirmed that Mahela Jayawardene would step down as head coach ahead of IPL 2027. First appointed in 2017, Jayawardene oversaw three of MI’s five IPL title wins, in 2017, 2019 and 2020. After serving as Global Head of Performance, he returned as head coach in 2025, replacing Mark Boucher. MI reached Qualifier 2 that season but finished ninth in IPL 2026. Jayawardene described his time with MI as a “very special part of my journey” and an experience he would “always treasure.”
“I leave with immense pride in what we have achieved together and will always carry a special place in my heart for MI. I wish the team every success in the years ahead,” he said.
MI owner Nita Ambani thanked Jayawardene for his contribution to the franchise.
“Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us,” Ambani said.

Mumbai Indians search for a new head coach
MI are expected to appoint Jayawardene’s successor soon, with reports suggesting the franchise has identified multiple candidates and could conduct interviews in the coming week. The decision to part ways was mutual, with the management seeking a fresh perspective ahead of IPL 2027.
It remains uncertain whether Jayawardene will continue in another capacity within the franchise. Meanwhile, speculation surrounding Hardik Pandya’s future and potential trade discussions could add to MI’s activity ahead of the mid-November retention deadline. However, no change to Pandya’s current status has been confirmed.
