Ajinkya Rahane, the former Indian cricketer who captained Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2026 IPL season, has joined calls to abolish the Impact Player rule from the tournament. The rule, which allows teams to replace a player with another after the toss, has drawn criticism from multiple cricketers over its impact on player development and match dynamics.
Rahane expressed his view that the rule should be removed entirely from the league’s framework, citing its negative effects on the development of all-rounders in Indian cricket. His position reflects broader concerns about the shortage of fast-bowling all-rounders in India’s cricket pipeline, a gap that has become more apparent in recent years.
“I think it should be taken out,” Rahane said on Cricbuzz.
Why Rahane believes the rule should be abolished
The former KKR captain recalled discussions among IPL captains about the rule’s future. He explained that most captains had expressed their opposition to the Impact Player rule before a captains’ meeting last year. Rahane noted that the current guidelines extend the rule’s operation until 2027, leaving uncertainty about whether the IPL will remove it this year or after the next mega auction.
“I remember last year, before the IPL captains’ meeting, most of the captains said they don’t want the impact player rule. And I think the guidelines or the rules, they have it till 2027. So we don’t know if this year they will take it out or after this year (when) the big auction is coming up, in that they will take it out. But ideally, I feel there is no point or use in having an impact rule,” Rahane said.
Impact on all-rounder development in Indian cricket
Rahane’s primary concern centres on the rule’s effect on all-rounder development within Indian cricket. He emphasised that all-rounders play a crucial role in the national team’s structure and that the Impact Player rule undermines their importance in the league. Rahane cited specific examples from the previous season where teams in difficult positions, such as 90 for 7 or 100 for 7, managed to reach 200 runs by using the Impact Player rule to introduce an additional batter into the innings.
“All-rounders are going out of the game, especially in the IPL. And I am a firm believer that you’ve got to develop your all-rounders. From the Indian team’s point of view, all-rounders are really important. So the impact player rule should be taken out,” Rahane said.
Rahane advocated for a shift in the league’s approach that would give bowlers greater advantage and ensure all-rounders receive more substantial roles in matches. His position aligns with broader concerns about the shortage of fast-bowling all-rounders in India’s cricket pipeline, a gap that has become more apparent in recent years.
