India Defends Asian Games Hockey Gold with Dominant Win Over Malaysia

India’s men’s hockey team has done something no Indian team has done before. They have won back-to-back Asian Games gold medals. On Saturday, they beat Malaysia 5-1 in the final in Kakamigahara, Japan. This is India’s fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold. The previous wins came in 1966, 1998, 2014, and 2023.

The win also created several records. Captain Harmanpreet Singh became the first Indian captain to lead the team to two Asian Games gold medals. Manpreet Singh won his third Asian Games gold. He is now the only Indian hockey player to achieve that. And for the first time, India won both the men’s and women’s hockey golds in the same Asian Games.

The 5-1 margin equals India’s biggest win in an Asian Games final. They also won 5-1 against Japan in 2023.

The match started cautiously. Both teams used aerial balls to move forward. The midfield was not as fluid as usual. India had a chance in the fifth minute. Harmanpreet intercepted a Malaysian pass and started an attack. Vivek Sagar Prasad shot from a tight angle, but it went over the bar.

India took the lead in the 11th minute. Harmanpreet found Hardik Singh on the right. Hardik passed to Abhishek, who earned India’s first penalty corner of the match. After a re-take, Harmanpreet scored with a low drag-flick. Malaysia responded quickly. In the 14th minute, Shello Silverius controlled a scoop pass and scored on the volley to make it 1-1.

In the second quarter, Malaysia had a penalty corner. Goalkeeper Mohith HS, who had replaced Suraj Karkera, made a save. Malaysia got another penalty corner through a video referral, but Faizal Saari’s flick hit Manpreet’s foot. India survived the re-take. In the 23rd minute, Jugraj Singh scored a powerful drag-flick to put India ahead 2-1. India held that lead at half-time.

After the break, India attacked more. In the 42nd minute, Sanjay won a penalty corner. A variation between Harmanpreet and Mandeep Singh led to a deflection off a Malaysian defender on the goal line. The referee awarded a penalty stroke. Malaysia protested with a video referral, but it failed. Hardik Singh took the stroke and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way. India led 3-1.

India kept pressing. In the 54th minute, Shilanand Lakra combined with Abhishek and Sukhjeet Singh before scoring from close range. That made it 4-1. In the 57th minute, India won another penalty corner. Harmanpreet stepped up and scored his second goal of the match. The final score was 5-1.

It was a strong team performance. India controlled the game after a tight first half. Their penalty corner conversions and attacking pressure made the difference. The gold medal also secures India’s place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

…Qualifies for the LA28 Olympics with Asian Games Hockey Gold

India have secured their place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. They did it by winning the men’s hockey gold at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. This is India’s fifth Asian Games hockey title and their second in a row.

The tournament started with pool matches. India were in Pool A. They won all five matches. They scored 48 goals in the process. Captain Harmanpreet Singh led the way with his penalty corner conversions. Korea finished second in the pool after beating Japan in a key match.

In Pool B, Malaysia had a strong campaign. They beat Pakistan 5-4 in a thrilling match. Malaysia won all five pool games to top the group. Pakistan finished second. That set up a semi-final between India and Pakistan.

The semi-finals were full of drama. Malaysia beat Korea 2-1 in a tight tactical battle. India faced Pakistan. The match was tied at 3-3. Then Abhishek scored in the final minute to give India a 4-3 win and a place in the final.

In the bronze medal match, Korea led 3-1 in the first half. Pakistan fought back. They made it 2-3 just before half-time. Then they scored three more goals in the final quarter to win 5-3 and take bronze.

With this win, India became only the third men’s team to qualify for the LA28 Olympics. The other two are the United States, as hosts, and Belgium. Belgium qualified earlier this year by winning the FIH Hockey Pro League.

The top six men’s teams outside the continental champion also earned entry to the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers. These are Malaysia, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, China, and Bangladesh. They will have another chance to qualify for the Olympics through that route.
