Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has dropped a bombshell on the fans of the sport across the world, as in a recent interview, he hinted that he might retire at the end of this season.
The 41-year-old is one of, if not the greatest, footballers of this century and in the conversation for being the GOAT of the sport. He made his top-level debut for Sporting Lisbon in 2002. In 2004, he made his first big move when he was transferred to Manchester United, where he won his first of five Ballon d’Ors in 2008.
In 2009, CR7 made a move to the biggest club in the world, Real Madrid, where over the next eight years, he became the highest goal scorer in club history. At the end of his time in Madrid, where he won three UEFA Champions Leagues in a row, many started considering him the greatest player in the history of the illustrious institution.
In December of 2022, after a few great seasons with Juventus and a decent return to United, Ronaldo, in a landmark move, signed with Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr. And for the past three seasons, he has been the highest goal-scorer in the Saudi Pro League.

However, after 24 years of playing football at the top level, Cristiano has hinted towards calling it quits and retiring at the end of this season. In an interview with Vogue Magazine recently, the Portuguese icon suggested that this could very well be his last season in football.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” he said.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal did not have the best showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. While Ronaldo scored three goals, including his first in World Cup knockouts against Croatia, Portugal was bounced out in the round of 16, losing 1-0 to eventual champion Spain.
Compare that to his rival Lionel Messi and his Argentina. While Messi scored eight goals in the tournament and assisted four, the Argentines reached the World Cup final for a second time in a row, only to lose to Spain.
Cristiano Ronaldo On Life After Football
“I have my future all mapped out,” he said. “I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard… “Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one. And also have more fun; travel more; watch and play padel, which I really like; and continue to enjoy what I’ve earned—what we’ve earned. Because after all, it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”
Ronaldo married his long-time partner Georgina Rodríguez earlier this month, making it even more likely that he would soon hang up his boots.
While at the age of 41, Cristiano Ronaldo is well past the age where most footballers retire, many assumed that he would push through for at least a couple more years and play in the 2028 Euros for Portugal.
Fueling this speculation was the hiring of Jorge Jesus as the Portugal manager. Jorge has close relations with Ronaldo, as under his management, CR7 won the Saudi Pro League for the first time with Al-Nassr in 2026.
Speaking of Al-Nassr, Ronaldo will be under contract with the club till June 2027, suggesting that the end of his current contract will also be the end of his career.
Ronaldo currently has 976 goals in professional football. For a long time, he has expressed his desire to become the first footballer to score 1000 goals. He is currently 24 goals away from the milestone, a tally that he has achieved in all of his past seasons with Al-Nassr.
