In a major piece of news from the Indian cricket team (men’s) camp, Ryan ten Doeschate has reportedly stepped down from his position as the India assistant coach.
As per a report in Cricinfo, ten Doeschate had informed the BCCI of his decision during India’s tour of the UK.
Why did Ryan ten Doeschate quit as the India assistant coach?
It’s not clear whether this decision by the ten Doeschate is a fallout from India’s disastrous UK trip, where they lost six T20Is, including a first-ever series defeat to Ireland, and lost the ODI series by a 2-1 scoreline. Doeschate is reported to also have had discussions with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and will rejoin the KKR franchise in a coaching role alongside head coach Abhishek Nayar.
Both Nayar and ten Doeschate were handpicked by Gautam Gambhir, along with Morne Morkel, when Gambhir was appointed the Indian cricket team’s head coach in 2024, replacing Rahul Dravid. Gambhir, Nayar, and ten Doeschate were together when KKR won the IPL 2024.
Nayar was removed as an assistant coach after the Test series defeats against New Zealand at home and Australia in the BGT 2024/25. Last year, Nayar rejoined KKR as the head coach, and now it seems Doeschate will be back to his former IPL franchise.
Ryan ten Doeschate was part of the coaching staff when India lifted the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Asia Cup 2025, and T20 World Cup 2026 trophies. However, Gambhir and his coaching staff have come under heavy criticism and scrutiny for India’s Test series defeats against New Zealand and South Africa at home and against Australia down under.
Doeschate had also been a premier person who had copped tough media questions after matches and series defeats. He had also taken up additional responsibilities of helping the players with fielding drills.
Who are in India’s current coaching staff?
With both Nayar and ten Doeschate now departed, Team India is without an assistant coach to Gambhir. The current coaching staff, apart from Gambhir, includes bowling coach Morne Morkel, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, and spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule.
When is India’s next series?
India’s next international series is a two-match Test series in Sri Lanka, starting on August 15, after which India will host West Indies for three ODIs and five T20Is.
