IPL 2026: Vaibhav Suryavanshi scripts history as Rajasthan Royals teenager becomes youngest to win Orange Cap

Indian cricket has witnessed the emergence of a remarkable new star. Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi capped off a breathtaking IPL 2026 campaign by securing the Orange Cap, becoming the youngest player in the history of the tournament to finish as its leading run-scorer. The 15-year-old prodigy ended the season with 776 runs, a tally that remained unmatched after the IPL final between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Ahmedabad.

Although Rajasthan Royals’ title dream ended with a defeat to Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2, Suryavanshi’s extraordinary season ensured that he remained the biggest talking point of the tournament. His fearless batting, record-breaking six-hitting, and ability to dominate experienced international bowlers have made IPL 2026 one of the most memorable seasons by a young cricketer.

Gujarat openers’ early exit confirms Orange Cap for Vaibhav Suryavanshi

Heading into the final, Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill and fellow opener Sai Sudharsan were the only players with a realistic chance of overtaking Suryavanshi in the Orange Cap race. Gill had accumulated 722 runs, while Sudharsan entered the summit clash with 710 runs.

However, Gujarat’s chase got off to a disappointing start as both openers departed inside the powerplay. Their early dismissals officially sealed Suryavanshi’s position at the top of the batting charts, allowing the Rajasthan Royals youngster to finish the season as the highest run-scorer in the competition.

The achievement adds another historic milestone to an already unforgettable campaign and further strengthens his reputation as one of the brightest talents in world cricket.

A season packed with records for RR star

Suryavanshi’s numbers tell the story of a player who consistently pushed the boundaries of T20 batting. In 16 innings, he amassed 776 runs at an impressive average of 48.50 while maintaining a staggering strike rate of 237.30. What made his season even more extraordinary was the manner in which those runs were scored. The teenager smashed 72 sixes during the tournament, setting a new IPL record for the most sixes hit in a single season. The previous benchmark had stood for years and was widely regarded as one of the toughest batting records in the league.

Alongside his six-hitting heroics, Suryavanshi registered one century and five half-centuries, regularly providing explosive starts for Rajasthan Royals throughout the campaign. Winning the Orange Cap at 15 years of age is an achievement that seemed unimaginable before this season. While most players his age are still progressing through age-group cricket, Suryavanshi established himself as one of the most destructive batters in the world’s premier T20 league.

His fearless approach, ability to handle pressure, and consistency against top-quality attacks made him one of the standout performers of IPL 2026. Beyond the records, he showcased a maturity that belied his age and often carried Rajasthan’s batting unit during crucial encounters.

So close to multiple hundreds

Despite scoring only one century on paper, Suryavanshi came agonisingly close to producing an even more historic season. His explosive 103 off just 37 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad was one of the highlights of the tournament.

However, he was denied additional centuries on three separate occasions. Scores of 93 against Lucknow Super Giants, 97 against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator, and 96 against Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 2 left him heartbreakingly short of further three-figure landmarks.

Even so, IPL 2026 will be remembered as the season when Vaibhav Suryavanshi announced himself to the cricketing world. Rajasthan Royals may have missed out on the trophy, but the tournament produced a new superstar whose record-breaking Orange Cap triumph could be the first of many.
