Will MS Dhoni play CSK’s final league match in IPL 2026? Michael Hussey shares major update

As Chennai Super Kings prepare for their final league-stage clash of IPL 2026 against Gujarat Titans, all eyes are on MS Dhoni and whether the legendary wicketkeeper-batter will return to action. With CSK’s playoff hopes hanging in the balance, fans have been eagerly waiting for an update on Dhoni’s fitness after the veteran star missed games due to injury concerns. Ahead of the crucial encounter, batting coach Michael Hussey has finally addressed the situation and provided clarity on Dhoni’s availability.

Michael Hussey provides update on MS Dhoni’s availibility ahead of GT clash

Speaking during a media interaction before CSK’s final league-stage fixture, Hussey revealed that Dhoni is currently recovering from a sore thumb and has not travelled with the squad for the important match against Gujarat Titans. According to Hussey, the injury is improving steadily, but the legendary former captain is still not fit enough to return to action immediately. However, he also expressed hope that Dhoni could rejoin the team if Chennai somehow manages to qualify for the playoffs.

Hussey said that Dhoni’s recovery is progressing well and added that the 44-year-old would be available later in the tournament if CSK advances beyond the league stage. The development has disappointed CSK supporters who were eager to see the iconic cricketer feature in what could potentially be Chennai’s final game of the season.

“I can confirm Dhoni is not here with the team, but if we do happen to qualify, then he’ll definitely join back up with the squad. He’s got a bit of a sore thumb. It’s recovering nicely, but he won’t be ready for this match. If we can manage to get through to the playoffs, then hopefully he’ll be alright,” said Hussey during the media interaction.

Notably, Dhoni’s IPL 2026 campaign has been heavily affected by fitness concerns. The former India captain has not played a single match this season due to multiple injury setbacks. Earlier, he was reportedly dealing with a calf problem before the latest thumb injury ruled him out again.

Despite not taking the field, Dhoni remained closely involved with the franchise throughout the campaign. He was present during Chennai’s previous home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, where the team also posed for a special group photograph. His absence on the field, however, has clearly left a massive void in both leadership and finishing ability for the five-time IPL champions.

CSK’s playoff hopes depend on other teams

The timing of Dhoni’s absence could not have been worse for Chennai Super Kings. The franchise currently sits seventh on the IPL 2026 points table with 12 points from 13 matches. Even if CSK defeats Gujarat Titans in their final league fixture, qualification for the playoffs is still not guaranteed.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s side now needs favourable results from other matches to stay alive in the competition. Their recent five-wicket loss against Sunrisers Hyderabad at Chepauk significantly damaged their chances and increased the pressure heading into the final round of league fixtures.

CSK have struggled with inconsistency this season, particularly in crunch moments, and Dhoni’s continued absence has only added to their challenges.
