IPL 2026: Riyan Parag explains reason behind RR’s defeat against SRH in Jaipur

A high-scoring clash in the Indian Premier League (IPL) turned into a tale of missed opportunities for Rajasthan Royals (RR), as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) chased down a daunting target with ease. Despite a sensational century from Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Rajsthan ended up losing the contest by five wickets. Following the loss, RR captain Riyan Parag opened up regarding the reasons behind the defeat.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s blitz lights up the Innings

The Royals looked firmly in control after posting an imposing total of 228 for six. The innings was powered by a breathtaking knock from young sensation Suryavanshi, who smashed a rapid century off just 36 deliveries. His explosive batting, featuring fearless stroke play and clean hitting, marked one of the fastest centuries in IPL history and gave RR a strong platform.

The batting unit delivered what seemed like a match-winning performance on a relatively flat surface. However, the game soon slipped away due to lapses in the field.

Riyan Parag opens up on the reason behind the defeat

Speaking after the match, Parag acknowledged that his team had performed well in most aspects but failed to hold their nerve in the field. He emphasized that dropping catches against quality opposition often proves decisive.

According to the RR skipper, the team executed its plans effectively with both bat and ball, but the inability to convert chances into dismissals proved too expensive. He highlighted that players like Abhishek Sharma and others are too skilled to be given second chances, and once they were let off, they made the most of those opportunities.

“I think skill-wise, we executed pretty nicely, but I think we dropped a few too many catches. Quality players like Abhishek and everyone who batted, I feel you can’t really drop catches of them and you can’t really give them second chances. And they took them, so credit to that. But we could have been better on the field,” said Parag in the post-match presentation.

Notably, SRH capitalized fully on Rajasthan’s errors. Abhishek, who went on to score 57, was handed two lifelines early in his innings. He made RR pay dearly, stitching together a crucial 132-run partnership with Ishan Kishan, who contributed a fluent 74.

Adding to RR’s woes, Nitish Kumar Reddy was also dropped when he was still settling in at 14. He later chipped in with a valuable 36, further tilting the balance in Hyderabad’s favor. The repeated lapses allowed SRH’s batting lineup to build momentum, turning what could have been a challenging chase into a manageable one.

SRH complete a historic run chase

Despite a record-breaking 36-ball century from Suryavanshi, SRH’s top order responded aggressively to make light work of the pursuit. Player of the Match Kishan (74 off 31) and star opener Abhishek (57 off 29) set the foundation with a blistering 132-run second-wicket partnership. Composed finishes from Nitish (36) and Heinrich Klaasen (29) ensured the Orange Army reached the target with nine balls to spare, marking the fourth-highest successful run chase in IPL history.
