Highest Team Score At Wankhede Stadium: RCB Break 11-Year Record

Knowing they have to put an above-par total at the dewy Wankhede Stadium, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batsmen came out with the gung-ho intent and smashed the highest team score at the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) home ground in IPL history.

Earlier in the IPL 2026 season, MI had begun their campaign by gunning down the target of 221 against the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede with five balls to spare.

And last month, England fell only seven runs behind India’s total of 253 in the T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final in Mumbai.

The fact that this particular ground is famous for being chase-friendly in night T20 matches is well-known, and with that knowledge Hardik Pandya, the MI captain, had inserted RCB in to bat first after winning the toss.

However, Pandya perhaps wouldn’t have expected that RCB could break the record for the highest team score at the Wankhede as RCB piled up 240/4.

The onslaught began from the third ball of RCB’s innings as Virat Kohli flicked Trent Boult for a six. The first four overs went for 43 runs, but the fifth over, by Mitchell Santner, was the signal of doom for MI’s bowlers as the New Zealand skipper conceded 22 runs with Phil Salt unleashing himself.

After a couple of quiet overs, Salt tormented Mayank Markande in a 20-run over before Kohli upped his ante. Shardul Thakur gave MI the breakthrough in the 11th over through Salt’s wicket. The Englishman departed for 78 (36), an innings that included six sixes and as many fours, forming a 120 (65) opening stand with Kohli.

While Kohli played a scratchy innings of 50 (38), Salt and then Rajat Patidar looked flawless and in full control. The RCB captain was off the blocks straightaway, whacking a 17-ball half-century as he took down the likes of Markande, Thakur, and Boult.

Kohli and Patidar were dismissed in the 15th and 16th overs, respectively, as RCB neared the 200-run mark. Jasprit Bumrah bowled two of the last four overs and conceded 20 runs, which was below RCB’s batting run rate, and Boult’s 10-run 20th over didn’t allow RCB to go beyond 240, while at one point it seems RCB could break the 260-run barrier.
