Tom Banton’s Personal Life

Banton first made his England T20I debut in New Zealand, just a week before turning 21. That came after a breakthrough season with Somerset, which made him a big name very quickly. At that time, he was even being compared to Kevin Pietersen, and he started picking up lots of franchise league deals, including the IPL.

But the fast rise became too much too soon. Bowlers figured him out, his runs started drying up, and he completely lost his love for the sport. He later openly admitted that he “hated cricket” during that phase, and also said he didn’t train as hard as he should have.

Banton also comes from a cricket background. His father, Colin Banton, briefly played for Nottinghamshire’s first team in the 1990s. His younger brother Jacques Banton was also involved in professional cricket and was briefly on Worcestershire’s books.

Tom originally started in Warwickshire’s academy, but later moved to the south of England to complete schooling at King’s College, Taunton. He once said that the move was inspired partly by Jos Buttler’s path, calling it “the whole Jos Buttler thing.”

Tom Banton Contract

Tom Banton signed a contract extension with Somerset on 25 September 2024, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026 season. He has spent his entire career with Somerset, after making his debut in a T20 match in July 2017.

Banton said he loves the club atmosphere and believes Somerset is regularly competing for trophies. Somerset director of cricket Andy Hurry praised him as one of the most naturally gifted players and also one of the hardest working.
